Researchers get first full look at prehistoric New Zealand penguin

After 35 years, a giant fossil penguin has finally been completely reconstructed, giving researchers new insights into prehistoric penguin diversity.
The bones were collected in 1977 by Dr. Ewan Fordyce, a paleontologist from the University of Otago, New Zealand. In 2009 and 2011, Dr. Dan Ksepka, North Carolina State University research assistant professor of marine, earth and atmospheric sciences and North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences colleague Dr. Paul Brinkman traveled to New Zealand to aid in the reconstruction of the giant penguin fossil.
Researchers dubbed the penguin Kairuku, a Maori word that loosely translates to "diver who returns with food." Ksepka was interested in the fossil because its body shape is different from any previously known penguin, living or extinct. He was also interested in the diversity of penguin species that lived in what is now New Zealand during the Oligocene period, approximately 25 million years ago.
According to Ksepka, "The location was great for penguins in terms of both food and safety. Most of New Zealand was underwater at that time, leaving isolated, rocky land masses that kept the penguins safe from potential predators and provided them with a plentiful food supply."
Kairuku was one of at least five different species of penguin that lived in New Zealand during the same period. The diversity of species is part of what made the reconstruction difficult, and the penguin's unique physique added to the difficulty.
"Kairuku was an elegant bird by penguin standards, with a slender body and long flippers, but short, thick legs and feet," says Ksepka. "If we had done a reconstruction by extrapolating from the length of its flippers, it would have stood over 6 feet tall. In reality, Kairuku was around 4-feet-2 inches tall or so."
The researchers reconstructed Kairuku from two separate fossils, using the skeleton of an existing king penguin as a model. The result is a tall bird with an elongated beak and long flippers ? easily the largest of the five species that were common to the area in that time period.
Their results appear in the Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology.
New Zealand has a history of producing exceptional fossils that give important insights into the history of penguins and other marine creatures. Ksepka hopes that the reconstruction of Kairuku will give other paleontologists more information about some the other fossils found in that area as well as add to the knowledge about giant penguin species. "This species gives us a more complete picture of these giant penguins generally, and may help us to determine how great their range was during the Oligocene period."

A new study, led by an Oregon State University geologist, has found that that the salty soils in the region actually suck moisture out of the atmosphere, raising the possibility that such a process could take place on Mars or on other planets.
The study, which was supported by the National Science Foundation, has been published online this week in the journal Geophysical Research Letters, and will appear in a forthcoming printed edition.
Joseph Levy, a post-doctoral researcher in OSU's College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences, said it takes a combination of the right kinds of salts and sufficient humidity to make the process work. But those ingredients are present on Mars and, in fact, in many desert areas on Earth, he pointed out.
"The soils in the area have a fair amount of salt from sea spray and from ancient fjords that flooded the region," said Levy, who earned his doctorate at Brown University. "Salts from snowflakes also settle into the valleys and can form areas of very salty soil. With the right kinds of salts, and enough humidity, those salty soils suck the water right out of the air.
"If you have sodium chloride, or table salt, you may need a day with 75 percent humidity to make it work," he added. "But if you have calcium chloride, even on a frigid day, you only need a humidity level above 35 percent to trigger the response."
Once a brine forms by sucking water vapor out of the air, Levy said, the brine will keep collecting water vapor until it equalizes with the atmosphere.
"It's kind of like a siphon made from salt."
Levy and his colleagues, from Portland State University and Ohio State University, found that the wet soils created by this phenomenon were 3-5 times more water-rich than surrounding soils and they were also full of organic matter, including microbes, enhancing the potential for life on Mars. The elevated salt content also depresses the freezing temperature of the groundwater, which continues to draw moisture out of the air when other wet areas in the valleys begin to freeze in the winter.
Though Mars, in general, has lower humidity than most places on Earth, studies have shown that it is sufficient to reach the thresholds that Levy and his colleagues have documented. The salty soils also are present on the Red Planet, which makes the upcoming landing of the Mars Science Laboratory this summer even more tantalizing.
Levy said the science team discovered the process as part of "walking around geology" a result of observing the mysterious patches of wet soil in Antarctica, and then exploring their causes. Through soil excavations and other studies, they eliminated the possibility of groundwater, snow melt, and glacial runoff. Then they began investigating the salty properties of the soil, and discovered that the McMurdo Dry Valleys weather stations had reported several days of high humidity earlier in the spring, leading them to their discovery of the vapor transfer.
"It seems kind of odd, but it really works," Levy said. "Before one of our trips, I put a bowl of the dried, salty soil and a jar of water into a sealed Tupperware container and left it on my shelf. When I came back, the water had transferred from the jar to the salt and created brine.
"I knew it would work," he added with a laugh, "but somehow it still surprised me that it did."
Evidence of the salty nature of the McMurdo Dry Valleys is everywhere, Levy said. Salts are found in the soils, along seasonal streams, and even under glaciers. Don Juan Pond, the saltiest body of water on Earth, is found in Wright Valley, the valley adjacent to the wet patch study area.
"The conditions for creating this new water source into the permafrost are perfect," Levy said, "but this isn't the only place where this could or does happen. It takes an arid region to create the salty soils, and enough humidity to make the transference work, but the rest of it is just physics and chemistry."

If you are like many students, you remember receiving the many pieces of mail over the past four years detailing your loans, but now you cannot seem to find the information. You most likely know your loans by the types of loans they are, like Stafford Loan, Perkins Loan and others. These loans are not all made by one company, but are sold off and serviced by a wide variety.
There is an easy-to-use resource to help locate all of your student loans and who they are owned or serviced by. The website to help you locate your student loans is http://www.nslds.ed.gov/nslds_SA/.
If you have private loans, such as those often made by banks or financial companies such as Discover, Citi, Bank of America or others, you may need to contact that financial institution directly, as their information is sometimes not located in the online database.
How do I pay my loans?
Once you graduate, you should be proactive about finding out when you need to start paying your student loans back.
Graduating from college can be a hectic time, and with all the address changes that you may be going through, it?s easy for mail to get misplaced or sent to the wrong address. It is the responsibility of the borrower, which would be you, to make contact with the owner or servicer of your loan(s) in order to find out when payments begin.
The owner or servicer of your loan will most likely offer you several options for repaying your loans, although not all companies offer these options, and some companies may offer more options. Here are a few basic options:
Standard Repayment: Think of this payment option as a standard loan, you make fixed payments that do not change from month to month for the standard repayment period (which is typically 10 years).

If the time limit of 25 years is reached, the government will forgive the remaining balance on the debt, although tax implications may apply.
Although these are just a few of the standard payment options, it is important to keep your current situation in mind when determining which payment plan is right for you. It is also important to think of the payment plan in terms of which will cost you the most in interest, as opposed to those repayment plans that will accrue the least amount of interest. Paramount Animation Chief David Stainton Resigns | The Wrap ...
David Stainton, president of Paramount Animation, resigned on Wednesday for personal reasons.
?We are grateful for the time David spent at the studio and we wish him well in his future endeavors,? Adam Goodman, president of the Paramount Motion Picture Group said in a statement.
Goodman will directly oversee the animation development team moving forward.
Paramount formed its animation unit last year after the success of ?Rango,? the Oscar-nominated film starring Johnny Depp. It also helped finance and distribute "The Adventures of Tintin."

It has pledged to release one new film each year starting in 2014.

Having spent several years building their business in Japan, TESCO the UK?s biggest retailer has decided to sell up.? Investors have been disappointed with the return from this part of the business as Tesco have found it difficult to achieve the economies of scale that make their UK supermarkets so profitable.? There are also concerns about their much larger investment in the US where TESCO?s Fresh & Easy chain is yet to make a profit.
Tesco has been successful in other markets, notably Eastern Europe and SE Asia, so what has gone wrong?
It seems that the Tesco way has worked well in emerging economies such as Thailand, Malaysia and China but run into problems in more developed markets like Japan, US and Taiwan. This is a recognisable phenomenon that I have come across with other international businesses. So called majority cultures such as the US and Japan are far more resistant to change than the developing world which is open to new ideas and eager to embrace opportunities.? In Europe multinationals often find it easier to pilot new products or systems in Hungary or Poland than France or Germany.
This analysis gives us an insight into some key factors which leaders need to consider when deciding on strategy. It also provides a bridge to a set of competencies which are needed by all professionals who are working internationally.
Push and Pull Framework
Companies need to know when to push their own agenda / approach and when to adapt or pull towards the local way. Individuals need to develop ?push skills?, such as focus on goals, autonomy, resilience and some approaches to influencing, but also ?pull skills?, such as active listening, rapport building, openness and acceptance*.
The push and pull framework provides a very powerful way for trainers and our learners to think about needs and the courses we design.? The starting point is to consider results and relationships ? what we want to achieve and how we are going to get our colleagues/partners to help us to get there. The results/relationships question needs to be asked at a strategic level ? we want to set up a business in Japan with a certain return on our investment but how much do we need to invest in building the right relationships locally? It can also be asked on a micro level for a particular telephone conference or meeting. Should I push my colleagues hard to clarify objectives and drive towards the deadline or should I pull by listening to their concerns?
Business Training needs to have a stronger business and cultural context in which a companies? professionals can develop these skills. It would be a mistake to just focus on the cultural and I believe some interculturalists have found themselves down this cul-de-sac.? Business people are not usually interested in culture per se. However, if you can show them how culture impacts on business at both a strategic and day-to-day operational level, then business training courses really start to add value.
At the same time as Tesco is pulling out of Japan, the country has elected a new prime minister: Yoshihiko Noda. He compares himself to the dojo loach ? an eel-like creature which scavenges in the mud for snails and leftovers. This unlikely and very self-deprecating way of presenting himself hints at the sort of relationship he wants to build with the Japanese electorate. He and the country are facing enormous challenges but he does not want to set himself apart ? on the contrary, modesty is his byword.
Wherever a company or individual is seeking to do business, they need to be very mindful of the cultural context. This does not mean they need to imitate the way locals behave but it does mean they need to observe carefully and consider the balance between the push and the pull.
