Alberto Alvarez was expected to testify Thursday about Dr. Conrad Murray's actions, including his claim that the physician told him to stash vials of medicine before calling police dispatchers.

Murray has pleaded not guilty to involuntary manslaughter in connection with Jackson's death.

Prosecutors have been calling witnesses who were with Jackson and Murray the day the singer died on June 25, 2009. Authorities accuse Murray of giving Jackson a lethal dose of the anesthetic propofol in the bedroom.

Video: Manslaughter trial of Dr. Conrad Murray (on this page)

As the involuntary manslaughter trial of Dr. Conrad Murray enters its third day, testimony will keep jurors focused on events in Jackson's bedroom during the frantic moments when efforts were made to revive the unresponsive pop superstar.

The panel has already gotten a glimpse into the entertainer's inner sanctum through photos and testimony.

In testimony during a preliminary hearing earlier this year, Alvarez said Murray ordered him to stash away vials of medicine and an IV bag before calling 911. Jackson, his eyes and mouth open, appeared to be dead, he said.

The bodyguard's testimony is crucial to prosecutors' contentions that Murray delayed calling 911 and was intent on covering up evidence that he had given Jackson propofol in his bedroom, a far different environment than the surgical settings where it is normally administered.

Alvarez's testimony will likely be challenged by Murray's defense attorneys, who on Wednesday questioned Jackson's head of security and the singer's personal assistant about why they didn't reveal certain details about the day Jackson died to police for at least two months. Defense lawyer Ed Chernoff asked Faheem Muhammad and Michael Amir Williams about whether they conferred with Alvarez before their interviews with detectives.

Williams, who was Jackson's personal assistant, said his interview with detectives had been delayed. He testified Wednesday that he received an urgent phone call from Murray on the day of Jackson's death but wasn't told to call 911. He called Muhammad, who then dispatched Alvarez to Jackson's bedroom on the second floor of the singer's rented mansion in the ritzy Holmby Hills neighborhood of Los Angeles.

The room was off-limits to Jackson's staff, and Muhammad paused before racing up the stairs after reaching the mansion just before paramedics arrived.

He described a heart-wrenching scene. By then, he said, Jackson had been removed from his bed and was on the floor, where Murray, sweaty and frantic, was performing CPR.

Alvarez was pacing nervously, Muhammad told the jury. When he saw Jackson up close, he understood why.

"What did you observe about his face," prosecutor David Walgren asked

"That his eyes were open," Muhammad said. "That his mouth was slightly open."

"Did he appear to be dead," Walgren asked.

"Yes."

The bodyguard soon noticed that Jackson's children, Prince and Paris, had gathered by the doorway.

Video: Witnesses recall Michael Jackson?s final hours (on this page)

"Paris was on the ground, balled up crying," Muhammad said. He ushered the children out of the room, and then into a sport utility vehicle so they could follow the ambulance to the hospital.

Paparazzi were already swarming the perimeter of the mansion and were waiting at the hospital, Muhammad recalled.

Some of the scenes recounted by Muhammad will likely be repeated Thursday as prosecutors work to fill in other details about Murray's behavior after finding Jackson unconscious. Also expected to testify on Thursday are Kai Chase, a chef who spoke to Murray briefly on the morning of Jackson's death, and paramedics who also tried to revive the singer. The medics believed Jackson was already dead by the time they arrived, but Murray insisted the performer be taken to a hospital for additional resuscitation efforts.

Prosecutors contend Murray did not tell any of the bodyguards or emergency personnel that he had been giving Jackson propofol and other sedatives to help him sleep.

Chernoff claimed in opening statements that Jackson gave himself the lethal dose.

Much of the trial in later sessions will focus on the science of what killed Jackson, and dueling theories of Murray's role.

For at least another day, jurors will hear from witnesses who knew him when he was alive.

New nanostructure-based process will streamline production of magnetic materials

Tuesday, September 27, 2011

Scientists at the University of Massachusetts Amherst report that for the first time they have designed a much simpler method of preparing ordered magnetic materials than ever before, by coupling magnetic properties to nanostructure formation at low temperatures.

The innovative process allows them to create room-temperature ferromagnetic materials that are stable for long periods more effectively and with fewer steps than more complicated existing methods. The approach is outlined by UMass Amherst polymer scientist Gregory Tew and colleagues in the Sept. 27 issue of Nature Communications.

Tew explains that his group's signature improvement is a one-step method to generate ordered magnetic materials based on cobalt nanostructures by encoding a block copolymer with the appropriate chemical information to self-organize into nanoscopic domains. Block copolymers are made up of two or more single-polymer subunits linked by covalent chemical bonds.

The new process delivers magnetic properties to materials upon heating the sample once to a relatively low temperature, about 390 degrees (200 degrees Celsius), which transforms them into room-temperature, fully magnetic materials. Most previous processes required either much higher temperatures or more process steps to achieve the same result, which increases costs, Tew says.

He adds, "The small cobalt particles should not be magnetic at room temperature because they are too small. However, the block copolymer's nanostructure confines them locally which apparently induces stronger magnetic interactions among the particles, yielding room-temperature ferromagnetic materials that have many practical applications."

"Until now, it has not been possible to produce ordered, magnetic materials via block copolymers in a simple process," Tew says. "Current methods require multiple steps just to generate the ordered magnetic materials. They also have limited effectiveness because they may not retain the fidelity of the ordered block copolymer, they can't confine the magnetic materials to one domain of the block copolymer, or they just don't produce strongly magnetic materials. Our process answers all these limitations."

Magnetic materials are used in everything from memory storage devices in our phones and computers to the data strips on debit and credit cards. Tew and colleagues have discovered a way to build block copolymers with the necessary chemical information to self-organize into nanoscopic structures one millionth of a millimeter thin, or about 50,000 times thinner than the average human hair.

Earlier studies have demonstrated that block copolymers can be organized over relatively large areas. What makes the UMass Amherst research group's results so intriguing, Tew says, is the possible coupling of long-range organization with improved magnetic properties. This could translate into lower-cost development of new memory media, giant magneto-resistive devices and futuristic spintronic devices that might include "instant on" computers or computers that require much less power, he points out.

He adds, "Although work remains to be done before new data storage applications are enabled, for example making the magnets harder, our process is highly tunable and therefore amendable to incorporating different types of metal precursors. This result should be interesting to every scientist in nanotechnology because it shows conclusively that nano-confinement leds to completely new properties, in this case room temperature magnetic materials."

"Our work highlights the importance of learning how to control a material's nanostructure. We show that the nanostructure is directly related to an important and practical outcome, that is, the ability to generate room-temperature magnets."

"Our work highlights the importance of learning how to control a material's nanostructure. We show that the nanostructure is directly related to an important and practical outcome, that is, the ability to generate room temperature magnets." As part of this study, the UMass Amherst team also demonstrated that using a block copolymer or nanoscopic material results in a material that is magnetic at room temperature. By contrast, using a homopolymer, or unstructured material, leads only to far less useful non- or partial-magnetic materials.

Pakistan tells U.N. committed to peace in Afghanistan (Reuters)

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) ? Pakistan is committed to achieving peace in neighboring Afghanistan and cooperating with the U.S. and Afghan governments, Pakistan's foreign minister told the U.N. General Assembly on Tuesday.

The remarks of Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar came after Pakistan warned the United States on Tuesday to stop accusing it of playing a double game with Islamist militants and heaped praise on its close friend China.

"Pakistan is willing to do its best with the international partners and, most notably, the governments of Afghanistan and the United States, to acquit itself of this high responsibility (in Afghanistan)," she told the 193-nation assembly.

The outgoing chairman of the U.S. military's Joint Chiefs of Staff, Admiral Mike Mullen, last week described the Haqqani network, the most violent faction among Taliban militants in Afghanistan, as a "veritable arm" of Pakistan's ISI spy agency.

He also accused Pakistan of providing support for the group's September 13 attack on the U.S. Embassy in Kabul, allegations that have infuriated Islamabad.

Khar suggested that current tensions between Pakistan and its partners were partly due to the difficulties they are all facing in their fight against terrorism, adding that it was important not to prematurely judge one's allies.

"Given the volatility of the situation, it is perhaps understandable that there is a high level of anxiety and emotions," she said.

"But we must not lose sight of the goals," Khar said. "We must work closely and as responsible partners in a cooperative manner and not rush to judgments or question each other's intentions."

PRAISE FOR PAKISTAN'S INTELLIGENCE AGENCY

Khar reiterated that she and the rest of her government "condemn the recent terror attacks in Kabul in which many precious lives were lost."

"Eliminating terrorism is in our national interest," she said. "We believe that our success is critical to regional and global peace and security."

She also praised the record of Pakistan's ISI in combating al Qaeda.

"It is well known that following the Tora Bora bombing and consequent dispersal of al Qaeda it was Pakistan's intelligence and security agencies that interdicted a large number of al Qaeda operations," Khara said.

"Very recently, (Younis) al-Mauritani, the chief operative of al Qaeda, was arrested in a joint ISI and CIA operation," she said.

Khar said her country was firmly committed to combating terrorism and militancy.

"Pakistan has reached out to all countries of the world to establish mechanims and arrangements ranging from intelligence cooperation, mutual assistance in legal and criminal matters, as well as joint operations where required," she said.

But it was vital for allies to remain united.

"We must demonstrate complete unity in ranks, avoid any recrimination, build greater trust and, more importantly, bring about the requisite operational coordination in combating this menace," she said. "Otherwise only the terrorists will gain."

Hall Construction Makes an Old House New Again ? Home ...

Compiled by Grace Thornton

Thanks to Hall Constuction, this 1969 two-story traditional home in the popular East Cobb neighborhood of Fox Hills has been completely remodeled. Starting with the porch area, Hall added a new roof, new front elevation design, a rocking chair porch, new windows and doors as well as new James Hardie concrete siding and some landscaping, giving the exterior a completely new look.

BEFORE

The excess of railing made the house seem uninviting before.

AFTERHall_Construction_After

The main-floor features a new floor plan made possible by removing a wall to open up the kitchen and living space. The kitchen now has custom cabinetry, a large island with a cooktop and breakfast bar, granite countertops, a copper sink and a butler?s pantry. A redesign of the fireplace accommodating an antique mantle gives the dining room a vintage aesthetic.

The kitchens custom cabinetry suits the feel of the house.

Second floor updates include a tray ceiling in the master suite; an expanded master bath with a spa shower, two sinks, custom cabinets, granite countertops and travertine tile; a new bathroom layout and design that included additional space for windows, which let in natural light, and a water closet. Finishing off the second floor remodel is a second full bath that includes custom cabinetry, a new steel tub/shower with tile, granite countertops and a double vanity. Desk nooks in the children?s rooms and an updated hand rail with wrought iron spindles leading to and from the second floor were added to update the space. The basement was finished with an egress window for safety, increased ceiling height and a guest suite complete with a full bathroom.

The house was painted inside and out, new wood flooring was tied in with refinished wood floors, the HVAC system was completely replaced and a second system was added for the second floor. Electrical systems were updated, a new control panel was added to the basement mechanical room, and cast iron plumbing was replaced with PVC pipes. Now this home has all the features of a newly constructed house within an established community close to Atlanta.

See more of the complete home remodel on this weekend?s NARI Atlanta Tour of Remodeled Homes.

(AP) ? President Barack Obama is encouraging students to work hard in their classes, saying the country is counting on them.

Obama was scheduled to speak Wednesday afternoon at Washington's Benjamin Banneker Academic High School. His back-to-school address will be televised live and carried online.

In his prepared remarks, Obama urges students to pursue an education after high school and says that in tough economic times, the country needs their ideas and passion.

"Whether we fall behind or race ahead in the coming years is up to you," he says.

Obama also confesses that he wasn't always the best student and didn't love every class he took.

"I'll let you in on another secret: I still don't always know the answers," he says. "But if I'd have just tuned out because the class sounded boring, I might have missed out on something that I enjoyed and something that's still useful to me today."

Benjamin Banneker Academic High School, a magnet school that opened in 1981, is designed to provide a rigorous academic background in preparation for college.

The White House released the text of the president's message the night before his speech to defuse any potential charges that he would be giving a political speech to the nation's schoolchildren. Two years ago, some conservatives accused Obama of bringing politics into the classroom with a similar back-to-school speech.

Last week, Obama announced his administration will allow states to apply for waivers around unpopular proficiency standards in the No Child Left Behind education law. To qualify, states must meet conditions such as setting evaluation standards for teachers and principals and imposing their own standards to prepare students for college and careers.

Intel Says 'Goodbye MeeGo, Hello Tizen' (NewsFactor)

Some days, it seems that mobile platforms are dropping like flies, yet growing like mushrooms. On Wednesday, Intel announced that it was dropping the MeeGo mobile operating system it had launched last year with Nokia, and, at the same time, will be developing an open-source Linux mobile platform called Tizen.

Intel will work with the Linux Foundation and the LiMo Foundation in the creation and launch of Tizen, with first release of the OS by first quarter of next year, and Tizen-based devices by the middle of 2012. Tizen will be built on standards-based web technologies. MeeGo had been an attempt by Intel and Nokia to merge their two previous Linux-based platforms, Intel's Moblin and Nokia's Maemo.

'Why Not Just Evolve MeeGo?'

On the MeeGo official blog, Intel Open Source Technology Center Director Imad Sousou asked a key rhetorical question: "Why not just evolve MeeGo?" The answer, he said, is that "the future belongs to HTML5-based applications, outside of a relatively small percentage of apps," and Intel believes its investment should shift in that direction.

But, he added, "shifting to HTML5 doesn't just mean slapping a web runtime on an existing Linux, even one aimed at mobile, as MeeGo has been."

Sousou said that emphasizing HTML5 means APIs need to evolve with platform technology and by market segment, which a new platform could more easily provide.

Tizen will reside within the Linux Foundation, be governed by a Technical Steering Group, will be developed openly, and will support tablets, notebooks, handsets, smart TVs, and in-vehicle infotainment systems.

On the new Tizen.org website, a welcoming statement said that Tizen APIs will cover various platform capabilities, including messaging, multimedia, camera, network, and social media, and there will be a development kit for creating native code. It's not yet clear if Tizen will use any of the development that already has been done for MeeGo.

Nokia's MeeGo Smartphone

On Tuesday, Nokia announced its first MeeGo smartphone, the N9, which could well be its last. In addition to Intel abandoning MeeGo, Nokia has committed to transitioning its smartphone line to Microsoft's new Windows Phone 7 platform, for which a feature-rich Mango update became available Tuesday.

Intel's long-term commitment to MeeGo had been unclear, especially in the wake of the Nokia-Microsoft alliance. Last month, for instance, Intel and Google announced they would work together to optimize new generations of Google's open-source Android platform for the chipmaker's low-power Atom processors.

Intel is especially interested in placing its 32-nanometer Medfield chip into mobile devices, as well as coming 22-nanometer processors. The dominant processor for smartphones and tablets are those based on designs from the U.K.-based ARM Holdings. ARM chips are used in smartphones from Apple, Samsung, HTC, Research In Motion, and in tablets.

At the time last month, Intel said it was still committed to MeeGo, but that it was interested in positioning it more for embedded applications.

Sprint's unlimited data plans aren't going anywhere, CTO confirms

Sprint may have plenty of changes in store for its upcoming "strategy update," but it looks like one crucial policy will remain in place -- unlimited data plans. Speaking to reporters at Mobilize in San Francisco yesterday, company CTO Stephen Bye confirmed that even though competitors like Verizon and AT&T are phasing out their unlimited plans, Sprint remains committed to providing its customers with infinite data. Doing so won't come without costs, since, as Bye explained, not all unlimited subscribers eat up the same amount of data. But the exec pointed out that these efforts are counterbalanced by the relative simplicity of managing unlimited schemes, and don't seem quite as prohibitive when compared with the hidden customer support costs involved with more complex, tiered plans. Yet despite all this optimism, Sprint seems fully aware that some major expenses are on the horizon, especially with a revamped 4G LTE network in the pipeline and, perhaps, with the iPhone 5 on the way. "Is there pressure? Yeah," Bye acknowledged. "There's a challenge for all engineers to work on how we get the cost structure down." Bye went on to reiterate, however, that although a new data network may attract new investors, it's ultimately Sprint's unique data plans that will keep its customer base intact.

Defending False Accusations of Child Abuse. Criminal Law

Without a doubt, being falsely accused of child abuse can be a very serious problem for parents, child care workers or educators. But unfortunately it has become a lot more common over the past decade. One reason for this is the fact that people can get in trouble for not reporting a suspicion of abuse, so it?s incumbent upon anyone who works with children to file a report, even if they?re only mildly suspicious.

Sometimes a false accusation of child abuse can be an innocent mistake, based purely upon the word of a small child who?s seeking attention. But in a number of cases, it can be done by one parent to the other as a way of seeking revenge in a nasty divorce. Either way, if you?re up against an accusation like this, you need to take it very seriously.

This may easily be really important part of this particular subject. A criminal lawyer can help you in defending false accusations of child abuse by preparing a legal defense that will clear your name. In addition, it?s important that the attorney you choose has a great deal of experience in this area. Many convictions are the result of a poor defense strategy or an attorney who has no experience in defending false child abuse claims.

Civil and Criminal Law Video ? YouTube

If you?re defending false accusations of child abuse, look for an attorney who has demonstrated abilities and a strong history of defending these cases successfully. He or she should be able to walk you through the steps they?ll take in your case ? from the investigation to the trial preparation, overall strategy and final presentation in court. In many cases, taking action immediately can keep the matter out of the court system entirely.

Conclusion

Many child abuse convictions were the result of a poor defense strategy or an attorney who has no experience in defending false child abuse claims. It?s behooves you therefore to find the right attorney who will help you in the case of child abuse allegations.

Driver: If I drive for you, you give me a time and a place. I give you a five-minute window, anything happens in that five minutes and I'm yours no matter what. I don't sit in while you're running it down; I don't carry a gun... I drive.I tend to spend most of my time during a film figuring out what is flawed about it, but every once in a while, I am graced with a film where I can sit down and enjoy every minute of it. That's exactly what I got from Drive, a hyper-violent, gruesome, tense, and throughly entertaining film throughout. Not only was it supremely entertaining, it is also wholly original; as well as a masterful lead from indie-guru Ryan Gosling, stylish direction from Nicolas Winding Refn, who all contribute to making Drive one of the best films of the year. Also, the soundtrack kick's ass.Read the whole review at www.creedsdelight.com

Switched On: No new wires, one new caveat

Each week Ross Rubin contributes Switched On, a column about consumer technology.

In the decade that WiFi has blanketed home networks across the United States, several technologies aimed at using existing wiring in the home have met with limited success. These have included MoCA (Multimedia over Coax, which has been adopted by some service providers for implementing multi-room DVRs) and HomePNA (originally for phone lines but later expanded to coax cable as well). At least three dueling standards have also sought to bring high-speed connectivity over electrical wiring. HomePlug, the most successful of these, has had several iterations. The latest - HomePlug AV - is rated at a theoretical throughput of 200 Mbits/sec. However, power line technologies have been held back by high prices and occasional interoperability problems.

But a new approach seeks to be the one protocol to rule them all, operating over phone lines, power lines or coax. Dubbed G.hn, the ITU standard promises up to 1Gbps theoretical throughput, with real-world usage over electrical lines expected to reach between 250Mbps and 400Mbps. If that sounds appealing to you, you're not alone. Service providers like the idea of G.hn since it allows them more flexibility than previous efforts. In fact, they like it so much that -- despite G.hn's capacity -- they have insisted on quality of service standards that could limit or prevent consumers from installing it themselves after they buy adapters from retailers.

The Truth About Sales Training Programs ? shortsaletraining.info

Spend half an hour researching online for the kind of sales training programs that are a big waste of money and time, and you?ll turn up some pretty sobering results. Corporations spend millions of dollars on motivational sales training seminars for their entire sales force only to discover that they do nothing to change behavior, attitudes or sales success.

The truth about sales training programs is that most simply do not work. That?s a lesson not lost on Steve Schiffman. As President of D.E.I. Management Group, Inc. ? one of the largest sales training companies in America ? he?s heard time and time again from corporations whose expensive investment in sales training generated nothing more than disappointment. In response, Schiffman takes great care to ensure that his motivational sales training seminars, sales management training and executive business coaching include the kind of practical instruction salespeople need to put theory into action ? from cold calling techniques to closing the sale.

Though any number of elements could be responsible for an ineffective sales training program, three stand out as common complaints:

1) Too much theory, and too little practicality. Anyone can develop a theory on how to boost sales results. What too few people can do is prove that it works. Some sales training programs promise the moon with their ?innovative? techniques, but have no real-world examples of its productiveness. Or they have examples, but don?t effectively teach seminar participants how to turn sales theory into sales action.

2) An inexperienced trainer who fails to engage the audience. Anyone qualified to teach a sales training program better have extensive experience on the frontlines of sales. He should have war stories to share ? both victories and defeats. And if he doesn?t know how to establish a rapport with the audience, or present the material in a compelling way, they?re not only going to tune him out, but discount the sales advice of someone who fails to sell himself.

3) Management doesn?t reinforce the training. Why train salespeople on a new approach if you?re not going to do the same for the sales managers? Yet, that?s exactly what many corporations do. Even if the sales force is excited about what they?ve learned, it does little good if sales managers don?t share the enthusiasm or fully understand the technique. Left out of the loop, some sales managers actually discourage their sales team from applying what they learned in the program.<

Steve Schiffman?s pragmatic approach to his motivational sales training seminars and executive business coaching is anything but theoretical. Certainly he touches on the theory behind his techniques, but only because he has three decades of real-world examples to back it up. In fact, that?s one of Schiffman?s tips to salespeople ? always be ready to share 10 stories about how you?ve helped 10 clients.

When it comes to experience, Steve Schiffman has been on the frontlines of sales for more than 30 years, employing a cold calling technique that typically generates a 75 percent response rate. He?s one of the country?s most sought-after motivational speakers on the subject of sales success and is a frequent guest on national radio and television programs. In other words, Schiffman excels at engaging audiences ? whether it?s a crowd of hundreds at one of his seminars, or a crowd of millions he?s connecting with through radio or TV.

Determined to implement his sales training expertise throughout all levels of a sales force, Schiffman has developed a sales management training program that he?s been leading successfully for years. In it he covers the same techniques as taught in the regular sales training programs, but with particular attention to leadership and reinforcement.

Sales training programs take time away from selling. So if they?re ineffective, you?re not only losing money on the cost of the program, but also on lost sales that could have been made in that lost time. The truth about sales training programs is that they can work, yet only with a practical, engaging, comprehensive approach ? the same kind of programs that Steve Schiffman has successfully shared with more than 500,000 people worldwide!

Abbas declares 'Palestinian Spring' (Politico)

RAMALLAH, West Bank ? Thousands of Palestinians cheering and waving flags gave President Mahmoud Abbas a hero?s welcome in the West Bank Sunday, as he told them triumphantly a ?Palestinian Spring? had been born following his historic speech to the United Nations last week.

Abbas? popularity has skyrocketed since he asked the U.N. on Friday to recognize Palestinian independence, defying appeals from Israel and the United States to return to peace talks. His request has pushed the region into uncharted waters, and left the international community scrambling over how to respond.

Thousands of people crowded Abbas? West Bank headquarters in the city of Ramallah to get a glimpse of the 76-year-old president upon his return from New York. Abbas was uncharacteristically animated, shaking his hands and waving to the audience.

Abbas compared his campaign to the ?Arab Spring,? the mass demonstrations sweeping the Arab world in hopes of freedom, saying that an independent Palestinian state is inevitable.

?We have told the world that there is the Arab Spring, but the Palestinian Spring is here,? he said. ?A popular spring, a populist spring, a spring of peaceful struggle that will reach its goal.?

He warned that the Palestinians face a ?long path? ahead. ?There are those who would put out obstacles ? but with your presence they will fall and we will reach our end.?

The Palestinians want an independent state in the West Bank, East Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip, territories captured by Israel from Jordan and Egypt in the 1967 Mideast war.

Israel says it?s ready for peace talks, but has rejected Palestinian calls to freeze construction of Jewish settlements in lands claimed by the Palestinians. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has also rejected Palestinian demands that the borders between Israel and a future Palestine be based on the 1967 pre-war lines.

Abbas last week asked the U.N. Security Council to grant the Palestinians full U.N. membership. The Security Council is expected to study the request for several weeks before making a decision, though the U.S. - Israel?s closest ally - has promised to veto the request if it proceeds.

As an alternative, the Palestinians say they will seek lesser observer status in the General Assembly - short of full statehood but a position that would allow them to join international bodies where they could push their agenda against Israel.

The United States, like Israel, says it is committed to Palestinian independence, but that direct negotiations, not a U.N. vote, is the only way to resolve the conflict.

A U.N. recognition will not change the situation on the ground, or resolve key issues like the fate of Palestinian refugees or the dueling claims to Jerusalem. But the Palestinians believe an international endorsement will boost their negotiating position should talks resume.

The international Quartet of Mideast mediators - the U.S., EU, Russia and U.N. - last week issued a statement calling for a resumption of peace talks without preconditions and a target for a final agreement by the end of 2012.

Abbas has signaled he will reject the Quartet?s plan, while Israel has hinted it accepts it.

Herman Cain walks away with victory in Florida straw poll (Daily Caller)

ORLANDO, Fla. ? Herman Cain won the Florida straw poll Saturday, rounding out three days of Republican Party and presidential campaign events. Cain won first place with 37.1 percent of the nearly 3,000 votes cast, more than double the second-place finisher?s tally.

Texas Governor Rick Perry, an early favorite, came in a devastating second, with about 15 percent of the vote, after raising expectations. Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney came in third with 14 percent.

Former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum followed with 10.9 percent, then Texas Rep. Ron Paul with 10.4 percent, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich with 8.4 percent, and former Utah Governor Jon Huntsman at 2.3 percent.

Minnesota Congresswoman Michele Bachmann rounded out the bottom with 1.51 percent.

Perry was the presumed winner during the days preceding the straw poll, but Cain swiftly gained ground, relentlessly covering the convention center with volunteers, supporters and campaign signs.

On Saturday, the Cain paraphenalia was only rivaled by that of Santorum?s campaign.

Romney?s third-place finish came largely as a surprise. His name was still on the ballot although he did not actively compete in the straw poll or send a surrogate to stump in the hours preceding the vote.

Perry had a disappointing showing at Thursday night?s Fox News debate, and he took heat for his stance on immigration and for his inability to drive home his challenges to Romney.

Teresa Valdez, a delegate from Port Orange who voted for Santorum, told The Daily Caller she couldn?t support Perry because of his weakness on immigration.

Even Perry supporters admitted their candidate underperformed at the debate. Perry volunteer Vicki Maddox of Tampa is one of them, although she defended his economic record when talking to TheDC.

But at a breakfast event in Orlando Saturday morning, Perry took a subtle jab at Romney and the other candidates who did not campaign for the straw poll.

?I think that?s a big mistake,? he said. ?I think the Florida straw poll is very important.?

Still, Perry only narrowly edged out a second-place finish over Romney, who said early on that his campaign would not be participating in straw polls.

Rep. Bachmann?s last-place finish was a blow to a flailing campaign. But in August, she too, confused Florida Republicans by announcing she wouldn?t actively campaign in the straw poll.

At the time, Florida Republican Party communications director Brian Hughes told The Daily Caller it was a ?bad move.?

?The path to the White House goes through Florida,? Hughes said.

Free Pets to Good Home ? Blog Archive ? Bird Feeders Squirrel ...

Keen bird watchers price bird feeders as an integral component of the backyard landscape. Now wherever there is bird foods there is bound to be squirrels welcome or not. If you want results at feeding wild birds, you will have to search at squirrel evidence feeders. Here are some squirrel information to take into account.

Squirrels are agile, bold and persistent. They are rodents so their teeth by no means stop increasing and adults call for up to two pounds of meals per full week. They are adept at climbing up a large selection of surfaces, like brickwork. The tougher the accessibility to feed, the more they turn into ninja squirrels ? genuinely ingenious acrobats. They are seldom outwitted, but they can be deterred and diverted.

Consider about the greatest feeder types and optimal spot in your yard ? constantly bearing in head that squirrels can leap up to 10 ft across a gap, jump as higher as five ft off the ground and are pleased dropping eleven ft from a height!

Feeders can possibly be suspended or pole-mounted. Pick to suspend them from an isolated branch of a deciduous tree (much less dense foliage than pine) or you could try out hanging them from a wire in between two trees (despite the fact that this would make refilling really tricky). Constantly suspend from a metal chain or wire and hook, in any other case the squirrels will chew through the cord to make the feeder will drop.

A very good bird feeders squirrel proof is a baffle. Manufactured from both large plastic or metal, it kinds an umbrella over the top of both suspended and pole-mounted feeders. The squirrels only slide off them. Baffles can also be put about 4 feet previously mentioned the ground beneath pole-mounted feeders ? greasing the pole with Vaseline can also be successful.

Caged bird feeders are a superior alternative mainly because they enable smaller birds entry to the feed, whilst excluding squirrels and greater birds also.

You can constantly opt for more significant tech squirrel evidence bird feeders. They are excess weight-activated. When a squirrel lands on a person, a spring mechanism brings about a metal shield to arrive down over the feeder or its perches give way. One more, which is also quite funny to view, has a battery-driven motor that spins the squirrel (harmlessly) off it.

Squirrels take in a broad variety of meals, but an additional way to fend them off is to supply the birds safflower seed, thistle seed (niger), and /or pure suet (devoid of seed), simply because they are just not that fond of them.

Of program, you can look at this from a fully different angle and get a squirrel feeder ? full with trapeze, tightrope and springboard. You can give squirrels their favourite foods in return for them placing on a wonderful circus efficiency for you. So while they are distracted, the birds get to try to eat too ? absolutely everyone wins.

Let?s confront it, squirrels will always be a aspect of our backyard gardens, and with strategic planning of bird feeder varieties, placement and bird meals sorts, we can guarantee not only that the birds get their honest share but also that we are entertained by funny squirrel antics.

Are you loyal to your ?practice?? (Let us ... - Authentic Writing Provokes

Saturday evening I ended up staying in. Original plans to visit a friend?s farm were revised, and thankfully the friend and farmer, was graciously understanding. ?I do my best to be loyal to the commitments I make and while dates may change, my intentions are ultimately to be loyal to the plans made.

So Saturday evening was now to consist of dinner and a movie at home. Ever seen the movie ?De-Lovely? starring Kevin Kline as Cole Porter and Ashley Judd as Linda Lee, his devoted and understanding wife? There is a large and fine cast of characters, the Cole Porter extended family I?ll call it. ?The Porters had a long-term and loyal community, or so the film portrays. We should all be so blessed.

I?ve watched this movie many times: You can do that when you own the DVD. And in past viewings I have always admired the music and the vitality of Cole Porter, Kline?s portrayal of him and the retrospective approach to telling his musical story with the help of an Angel played by Jonathon Wright (whom I also LOVE!). This time though there was something different and special that struck me about the film I had not noted before.

There is a scene rather later in the movie wherein Cole Porter is living apart from Linda Lee who has returned to Paris and is taking time to determine what next for herself. Cole has been composing all night long after attending an opening of a new show, sans his muse. Morning comes and he is called to breakfast by a friend and house guest, but he opts to go for a horseback ride before breakfast. He takes a fall off that horse when the horse rears up over a hornets nest and falls on him, crushing both legs badly. In typical Hollywood style, Linda Lee returns promptly and rallies for Cole?s legs with the doctor and then with Cole over getting back to work. (Cross-checking revealed that Hollywood took some creative license in the Cole Porter timeline?imagine that?) But just take the scene at face value for the sake of the theme of this post. Please. And thanks!

Linda is the epitome of loyalty from the moment she binds herself to Cole in marriage, even knowing his idiosyncrasies. She loves all of him with a constancy and always with elegance and good breeding. She exemplifies tender, firm, loyal and love when it comes time to push him to self-reliance. ?I can?t work the pedals,? he cries out in pain as she leaves his music room and encourages him to play the piano after bringing him home from the hospital. Outside the closed door to his study, she sobs as quietly as she can, as he shouts for help because he can?t work the pedals. And it would be years before Cole could work the pedals, but Linda Lee?s gentle insistence and support were always in the wings. And in the film, as in real life, Cole Porter would walk again and play again, though with less agility, but that was the least of Linda?s concerns. She wanted him to keep his spirit and reason for getting up each day, in tact.

There were several striking things that stayed with me this time.

1. Cole Porter wrote music that was forever sharing his inner thoughts and alluded to his personal life. And he wrote them as a man in the business of writing music and lyrics and playing for audiences small and large. What occurred in the songs was a reflection of what was going on his life. He was consistent in this way of being and creating music that remains compelling to me. He was masterful technically and also at sharing his heart?s pains and sorrows, couched in humor and tenderness. WHERE ever did you get the idea that YOU and your stories don?t belong in your writing?

2. Cole Porter had a devoted champion in Linda Lee who sometimes acquiesced to his eccentricities and others times put her foot down (though gently) when something needed changing for the overall betterment of his career. She was at times an anchor and others times a rudder, but always a ?muse? that supported him in doing what he did best. She kept him focused and supported. And she had quite the network to expose him to.?Do you have people on your team who believe in you and also tell you the truth about your writing and communications? Do they speak up? Do you take to heart what they offer? I?m not talking lip service here!

What struck me this time?watching a film I enjoy for the music, the acting and the messages, is how AUTHENTIC Cole Porter was as a lyricist and artist and musician. He shared himself pretty much all the time through his songs.

Could you be like Cole Porter at his best in your writing and/or speaking to create connections that stick for the long term one way or another? Here is hoping that you are up to the task of being real in your self-expression to grow your business and client base WHILE also being a kind human being. That is a win-win!

MRI Can Spot Breast Cancer in High-Risk Women: Study (HealthDay)

TUESDAY, Sept. 20 (HealthDay News) -- New research finds that compared to mammograms, MRI screenings for breast cancer saved money used for diagnosis and boosted the likelihood that high-risk, underserved women who were specially targeted would return for follow-up appointments.

But there's a big catch. Researchers were able to reduce the cost of an MRI scan to $649 on average -- compared to the usual $3,500 -- thanks to a grant. As a result, the cost per diagnosis was cheaper -- $21,561 for cancers found using MRI and $37,375 for those found using mammography.

"What we need is to lower the cost of MRI, and maybe that will happen as we do more of them," lead researcher Dr. Anne C. Ford, assistant professor in obstetrics and gynecology at Duke University Medical Center, said in a news release from the American Association for Cancer Research.

In the study, the researchers compared two groups of women, all of whom were uninsured or underinsured. One group included 299 women with general risk factors who received mammography, and the other included 299 high-risk, underserved women who underwent MRI screening.

The mammography screenings detected one case of breast cancer, while the MRI screenings detected nine.

"In an underserved population, using this model, it is cost effective to screen with MRI because we found more breast cancers with MRI than we did with mammography in this population," Ford explained in the news release. "If you truly target high-risk women with MRIs, you can find the cancers, and you can find them early."

Three-quarters of women who received mammography followed up with screenings compared to 90 percent of those who underwent MRI screenings, the investigators found.

Results of the study were scheduled to be released Tuesday at the American Association for Cancer Research Conference on the Science of Cancer Health Disparities in Washington D.C. Because the study was presented at a medical meeting, the data and conclusions should be viewed as preliminary until published in a peer-reviewed journal.
