By Democrat sports staff

He spent part of March wrestling in the CIF State Championships. In April he traveled to Peru for a nine-day humanitarian/wrestling trip in April.

Now Pioneer?s Tyler Thomas is ready for the next phase of his life.

The senior is planning on staying busy by finishing paperwork to attend Menlo College this month before graduating from high school next month.

?I?m going down there (to Menlo College today) to sign papers,? he said.

The college is a small, private institution located in Atherton. Thomas said he plans to continue wrestling there on a partial scholarship.

?I was thinking about going up to Oregon State or Southern Oregon, but Menlo was just more appealing,? Thomas said. ?The coach got back to me, he seemed interested in me.?

He said he is undecided on his major.

?I?m just going to get my general (education) out of the way first and I?m sure my major will come to me one day,? he said. ?I just don?t want to make the wrong decision.?

Thomas enjoyed the view at Machu Picchu, a 15th-century Inca site in Peru, as well as the perspective the trip it gave him on how privileged he is to live in the United States.

?It was a huge culture shock,? he said. ?How they live over there is crazy. It?s nothing like how it is back here in the States. It really makes you feel grateful for what you have.?

As for Machu Picchu, he said it was ?breathtaking.?

?I really don?t have the words to describe

it,? Thomas said.

As part of the humanitarian efforts, Thomas got to hang out with a group of children ages 5 to 13 that saw him and the other wrestlers as celebrities.

?There were literally like a 100 kids coming up to you with a pen and paper wanting your autograph,? he said. ?It made you feel pretty good inside, making them happy.?

Thomas ended up winning both the freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling meets on the trip.

After graduating, Thomas said he plans on continuing to work out and train so he will be ready to wrestle again in the fall. He also plans on getting a job to help pay for his tuition.

?It?s an expensive school to go to, but I got a good offer,? he said in reference to his partial scholarship.
