Sequestration causes military to close some pools

NORFOLK-- Sequestration has caused the military to downsize their aquatics program.?

According to Navy spokeswoman Kelley Stirling, there will now be only one pool open at each installation at a time.?

Stirling says swim lessons are being consolidated to one base, NAS?Oceana.

Pools which remain open:

Naval Support Activity, Northwest Annex seasonal pool (outdoor pool)
Hours:
Monday - Thursday from 2 p.m. until 6 p.m.
Friday, Saturday, Sunday from 11 a.m. - 6 p.m.
There is no cost to use the pool.

Norfolk Naval Shipyard, Scott Center Annex Pool (outdoor pool)
Hours:?
Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Holidays from 2 p.m. - 7 p.m. now through Labor Day
There is no cost to use the pool

Aeropalms
Hours:
Weekends only until June 15, 11 a.m. - 5 p.m.
Beginning June 15, open daily from 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. except Tuesday.
Closed on Tuesday for cleaning and maintenance.

Gator Pool
Hours:
Weekends until June 18, 11 a.m. - 6 p.m.
Beginning June 18, open daily from 11 a.m. - 6 p.m. except Monday and Tuesday.

NAVSTA Norfolk MWR
Waterfront Athletic Complex
Hours:
Monday - Friday,? 5 a.m. - 11 p.m.
Saturday and Sunday 1 p.m. - 6 p.m.

Fleet Recreation Indoor Pool
Monday - Friday 6 a.m. -? 8 a.m. and 11 a.m. - 6 p.m.
Saturday 8 a.m. - 6 p.m.?

It's a similar situation at Langley Air Force Base in Hampton and at Fort Eustis in Newport News.

The outdoor Langley have not been opened and we are assessing whether we will be able to provide the benefit, said Lt. Brooke Betit. She said fiscal challenges meant the youth summer hire program couldn't be supported and that's the program which gets lifeguards for Langley, she added.

She said the command hasn't made a final decision on whether the outdoor pools at Langley will remain closed.

At Fort Eustis, the decision's in: the outdoor pools will not open for budget reasons. However, the indoor pool/acquatic center with an adventure and lap area and the splash park in the housing area will be open for military families, Lt. Betit added.
