djay 2

We know you'll be said, but your trusty recap writer is taking a sabbatical for the next two weeks. Fear not -- MacLife.com readers will be in good hands during our absence, and there will be plenty of great content to enjoy while we're away! For that matter, here's a handful of news to close out the work week with, and we'll see you back here on Tuesday, August 13!

Algoriddim Release djay 2 for iPhone, iPad

Mere days after being teased, developer algoriddim has released djay 2, a major new version of its popular virtual DJ app for iPhone or iPad. Featuring a "groundbreaking new user interface" with a built-in drum machine, djay 2 allows users to "mix and scratch your music on a hyper-realistic turntable interface." Easy for beginners but powerful enough for professionals, djay 2 also includes HD Waveforms, a new layer that displays audio in a visual, color-coded way. The apps are available for the first week only with a special launch discount of 50 percent ($4.99 iPad, $0.99 iPhone) for new or existing users; the Mac version has not been updated at this writing.

Google Calls Off Free Netflix Promo with Chromecast Purchase

The Los Angeles Times reported Thursday that Google has killed a Netflix promotion included with initial shipments of its new Chromecast dongle, only a day after the $35 gadget first went on sale. The promotion gave new or existing Netflix users three months of free video streaming with each purchase, a $24 value that was apparently biting too hard into Google's profit margin. "Due to overwhelming demand for Chromecast devices since launch, the 3-month Netflix promotion (which was available in limited quantities) is no longer available," a Google representative said in a statement. Chromecast is currently sold out on Amazon.com and heavily backordered on Google Play and BestBuy.com, but is still expected to arrive at Best Buy retail stores this Sunday.

Shutterfly for iPad Finally Updated with Photo Ordering, Gifts

It's been a long time coming, but photo service Shutterfly finally updated its native iPad app on Thursday, reaching feature parity with the separate iPhone version. After updating, Shutterfly customers can now preview, create and order photo prints as well as more than 40 other products including iPhone and iPad cases, mouse pads, mugs and more. Photos can have creative filters applied before ordering prints or gifts, and it's all wrapped up in a slick package that shows off uploaded photos quite nicely. Shutterfly for iPad 2.0 is now available from the App Store.

Apple China Begins Educating Consumers on Power Adapters

Following recent reports of customers being shocked or even electrocuted because of third-party, knockoff iPhone power adapters, Apple China has gone on the offensive with a web page detailing how to spot an authentic, Cupertino-made charger. "Apple always put the user's safety first, so all of our products are subject to stringent safety and reliability testing, and designed to meet government safety standards around the world, including for the iPhone and iPad USB power adapter," an English translation of the text reads. Investigations are ongoing into the most recent incidents in China, which resulted in a coma for one man and the death of a 23-year-old woman in an unrelated event.

Logic Pro X Receives First Bug Fix Update

MacRumors reported Thursday that Apple's shiny new Logic Pro X has already received its first update to version 10.0.1. The $199.99 pro audio software includes fixes for stalled downloads of additional content, accidental 24-bit audio file conversion, stability improvements with Flex Pitch is enabled, graphic and selection behavior issues with Score Editor and more. The update is free for existing customers and can be downloaded now from the Mac App Store.
