Washington, DC had the most property crimes per capita in 2010 with more than 4% of the population being effected. After DC, the 5 worst states for property crimes in 2010 according to the FBI were:

1.South Carolina
2.Texas
3.Washington State
4.Tennessee
5.Louisiana

The State of Georgia is next on the list after Louisiana as one of the worst states in the US for property crimes in 2010. The 5 best states with the least property crimes in 2010 were:

1.North Dakota
2.South Dakota
3.New York
4.Idaho
5.New Jersey

Though property crimes are not a representation of all crimes in a state, this category represents the largest variable for determining property values and their fluctuation relative to crime statistics. Choosing to live in the "wrong" town can cause loss in property values or property. Some people do not have a choice, but one's knowledge about their surroundings is important. Policy-makers must also take note so they can adjust budget allocations from ineffective uses to crime control.

There are cities where crime is the unfortunate product of heavy commerce mixed with a high population of poverty-level citizens. Loss of jobs lead to increased crime, while new laws and threats cause additional work-loads on justice department staff. Priorities must be considered when determining the most important crimes to fight. Property values are important, but large-impact crimes typically take primary focus. The damage to the World Trade Center property on 9/11/01 had a large impact and investigations continue.

Companies such as Wackenhut (G4S) and Command Security Corporation would potentially consider locating offices and marketing efforts in states reporting high crime. G4S stock (BG) has almost doubled in the past year, an incremental increase along with crime and security threats. G4S can be considered a market index for the Security industry. Though stock values are not always an exact representation of a company's profits, specific industry leaders that report consistent price value increases over a year are shown to be a representation of an industry or macro-economic trend. By comparing the performance over the past year with the performance of other sectors, one can find similarities that can be used for market forecasting.

Whatever one has as a reason to study crime statistics, their effectiveness must be considered. Too much focus on one source of statistics or a single type of statistic may cause innacurate assumptions and/or conclusions. The crime level of a state must also be weighted by the economic opportunities of a state before concluding property values. Local crime rates may be high, such as in DC, but other real estate factors such as historical value, proximity to employment, and cool neighborhoods play as important roles in determining property relevance in each state and city.

The Different Types of Heart Disease | Health, Fitness & Wellbeing

Heart disease, also known as cardiac disease, is an extremely serious medical condition. Most people tend to believe heart disease is a condition other people have instead of them having the possible medical condition. The fact is heart disease is the leading killer in the United States. It is also the major cause for people to become disabled.

There are many types of heart disease. The most common type is blockage of the arteries, which is the main blood vessel supplying blood to the heart. This type is called coronary heart disease. It is a gradual process of the blockages yet it is the major reason for heart attacks.

The other types of heart diseases involve the valves in the heart where the heart has restricted pumping action leading to heart failure. Some people are born with this type of heart disease.

It is possible to reduce the risks of heart disease by taking steps to control the factors causing the risks. The steps to reduce the risks are controlling the blood pressure, lower the cholesterol levels, do not smoke, get plenty of exercise, avoiding fatty and unhealthy foods and beverages, avoiding stressful situations as much as possible, and maintaining a healthy weight.

Coronary arteriosclerosis (CAD) is the most common type of heart disease leading the deaths in the United Stated. It happens when the arteries supplying blood to the heart become hardened and narrowed due to the buildup of cholesterol and another material called plaque. This leads to the heart muscle not getting enough blood or oxygen. This is the cause of angina or heart attack. Heart attacks occur when a blood clot cuts off the heart?s blood thus damaging the heart.

CAD also weakens the heart muscle and contributes to heart failure and arrhythmias. Heart failure is when the heart cannot pump blood to the rest of the body. Arrhythmia is the changing of the normal heartbeat.

Heart failure also called cardiac failure and CHF or left-sided heart failure and right-sided heart failure is a condition where the heart cannot pump blood to the rest of the body. Heart failure is when the heart stops or is about to stop. The weakening of the heart?s pumps causes blood and fluid to backup into the lungs, fluid to buildup in the ankles, legs, and feet (this is called edema) and tiredness and shortness of breath.

The leading causes of heart failure are high blood pressure, diabetes, and coronary heart disease. The treatment for heart failure includes treating the cause of the heart failure, heart transplants, and medications. Heart failure is a very serious condition causing about 5 million people in the United States to have this condition and contributing to more than 400,000 deaths a year.

A Far-Out Solar System That Looks Like Ours

From far enough away,, our solar system looks 2-D. All eight planets still orbit on nearly the same horizontal plane, which matches up with the plane of the sun's equator. It?s what makes our home system look like a flat, spinning disc, and also a sign that our system hasn?t experienced anything too chaotic since its formation more than 4 billion years ago.

Until now, many astronomers thought that comparatively few star systems end up looking like ours. The planet-hunting Kepler telescope has spotted many systems in which the arrangement of worlds is askew rather than orderly. But now, thanks to new research being published in the journal Nature this week, scientists say there might be many more star systems that look like ours.

The three planets of a star now called Kepler-30 all appear to be in orbit around their star on the same horizontal plane, according to Roberto Sanchis-Ojeda, the lead author on the study and a Ph.D. candidate at MIT. "The physical conditions of the new system are such that it looks pretty much like our system."

Bumpy Beginnings

The birth of a solar system can be a messy process. The forming star?s gravitational pull attracts dust, gas, and rock that form a ring around the newborn. After billions of years, the chaotic ring eventually starts to differentiate itself into the component parts of what we recognize as a solar system.

Round planets and oddly shaped asteroids carve out their own orbits in the newly formed planetary neighborhood. But usually, Sanchis-Ojeda says, the results aren?t perfectly clean. Maybe a few planets scatter to one side or fall into a different orbit. Sometimes, if two planets form close together, the larger world?s gravitational forces can push the weaker out of orbit or off track. A rogue asteroid or comet could quite literally knock a planet out of whack.

Turbulence rocked our own solar system in its early days. For instance, the most likely explanation for the moon?s origin is that a Mars-size world struck the forming Earth, expelling the material that coalesced into our satellite. Nevertheless, the forces that wreaked havoc on solar systems around the galaxy early in their lives seem to have left ours relatively unscathed?despite the dangers, we wound up with eight planets on a horizontal plane.

Looks Like Home

Sanchis-Ojeda and his team were on a mission to find solar systems shaped like ours. The researchers used Kepler data to pick out certain star systems that fit within their parameters. Specifically, they wanted to study close young active stars with plenty of starspots (the equivalent of sunspots but on another star). These cooler areas on the surfaces of a star can act as markers for where a star is in its rotation; if you see the same starspot twice, you know the star has completed a revolution. Even though these spots fade with time, they stick around long enough to get a good read on the spin of a young star.

Sanchis-Ojeda saw three planets in the Kepler-30 system cross in front of, or transit, the same starspot?one right after the other. This meant that either the planets just happened to line up at that lucky moment before continuing their orbits on different geometric planes, or they were formed like our solar system?from a horizontal ring of gas and space dust. Sanchis-Ojeda hoped for the latter.

His confirmation came when the planet closest to the star transited the same starspot twice in the time Kepler had its eye on the system. The second transit all but affirms that the three planets didn?t just align by chance during their dissimilar orbits, he says?they must be on the same plane.

Kepler-30 is particularly important because its planets spin at an angle we can see from Earth. Our perspective and the placement of the relatively close solar system match up, making it easier to observe the transits. Kepler-30 is also quite close to the sun in mass and radius.

More Out There

Drake Deming, a professor of astronomy at the University of Maryland and author of a commentary accompanying the new study, says the researcher?s methods for tracking planetary orbits could eventually become a new standard for planet hunters, especially those looking for more solar systems like ours in the Universe.

Before Kepler, most of the exoplanets discovered were hot Jupiters?huge gaseous planets that were usually orbiting their stars in wildly oblique patterns. Astrophysicists know a lot about these "hot Jupiter" systems because they were relatively easy to study without space-based telescopes like Kepler.

But now researchers are finding more evidence that multiplanet systems such as ours are far more common than the solitary gas giants. "New studies have shown that indeed only one out of every 100 stars have a hot Jupiter," Sanchis-Ojeda says. "There are many more small planets close to a host star."

Although the Kepler-30 planets probably don?t hold life?all three are too close to their home star?they represent another step closer to finding a solar system that might, Deming says. The next step could be a new NASA program that, if funded in the fall, would take Sanchis-Ojeda?s methods even further. The Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) is a Kepler-like satellite, but instead of focusing on a small sliver of the sky, TESS would survey the entire sky for nearby solar systems that could be similar to ours. "TESS would be an all-sky version of Kepler," Deming says. "We?ll have a better chance of finding nearby stars. It might be the future of exoplanetary science."

Box Comes To Windows Phone, Announces Partnership With Qualcomm

Box announced Tuesday the availability of Box for Windows Phone, as well as a new partnership with Qualcomm to make Box standard on future Android and Windows Phone devices.

?This is our first opportunity to work with Windows Phone. We?re just now starting to see interest from our customer base," Chris Yeh, head of platform at Box told Mashable.

Feces fossils lend new insights into connection between Native-Americans, diabetes

Why do Native Americans experience high rates of diabetes? A common theory is that they possess fat-hoarding "thrifty genes" left over from their ancestors ? genes that were required for survival during ancient cycles of feast and famine, but that now contribute to the disease in a modern world of more fatty and sugary diets.

A newly published analysis of fossilized feces from the American Southwest, however, suggests this "thrifty gene" may not have developed because of how often ancient Natives ate. Instead, researchers said, the connection may have come from precisely what they ate.

The research, which appears in the latest edition of the journal Current Anthropology, suggests that the prehistoric hunter-gatherer civilizations of the Southwest lived on a diet very high in fiber, very low in fat and dominated by foods extremely low on the glycemic index, a measure of effects food has on blood sugar levels. This diet, researchers said, could have been sufficient to give rise to the fat-storing "thrifty genes."

"What we're saying is we don't really need to look to feast or famine as a basis for (the genes)," said Karl Reinhard, professor of forensic sciences at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's School of Natural Resources and the study's lead author. "The feast-or-famine scenario long hypothesized to be the pressure for 'thrifty genes' isn't necessary, given the dietary evidence we've found."

Natives have some of the highest rates of Type 2 diabetes of any group and are more than twice as likely to develop the disease as are Caucasians. The notion the gene's origin goes back to feast-and-famine cycles among prehistoric hunter-gatherer ancestors has been discussed for nearly a half-century.

To fully understand the basis of the high rates, Reinhard said, "one has to look at the best dietary data one can find. That comes from coprolites (the official term for fossilized feces). By looking at coprolites, we're seeing exactly what people ate."

The coprolites are from Antelope Cave, a deep cavern in northern Arizona where, over several thousands of years, was home to various cultures. That includes the Ancestral Pueblan peoples, who are believed to have lived there seasonally for at least 450 years.

Reinhard and Keith Johnson, an archeologist at California State University, Chico, studied 20 coprolites found in the cave and combined it with analysis from other sites for hints of ancient Natives' diets. They found clues to a food regimen dominated by maize and high-fiber seed from sunflowers, wild grasses, pigweed and amaranth. Prickly pear, a desert succulent, was also found repeatedly in the samples.

By volume, about three-quarters of the Antelope Cave coprolites were made up of insoluble fiber. The foods also were low on the glycemic index; some research suggests that high-GI foods may increase risk of obesity and diabetes.

The analysts' findings led them to deduce that the nature of the feast, and not necessarily its frequency, was enough to lock the "thrifty" genes in place ? and leave modern Natives more susceptible to diabetes as their diets evolved to lower-fiber, higher-GI foods.

"These were not just famine foods," the authors wrote. "These were the foods eaten on a day-by-day basis during all seasons in both feast and famine. They continued to be eaten even after agriculture was developed. Antelope Cave coprolites show that this high-fiber diet was eaten during the warmer seasons of food abundance."

In addition to UNL's Reinhard and California State Chico's Johnson, the study was authored by Isabel Teixeira-Santos and Monica Viera of the Escola Nacional de Saude Publica in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Meet the Robot Jellyfish Powered by a Rat's Heart Cells

We love bio-mimicking bots. In recent years scientists have developed robotic versions of fish, snakes, and even cheetahs that not only look like their biological counterparts, but swim, slither, or run like them, too.

Thw newest one is a tiny robot jellyfish that appeared this week in the journal Nature Biotechnology. Built by Caltech and Harvard bioengineers led by Kit Parker, it undulates through the water by expanding and contracting. This isn't the first robot jelly?previously, we covered RoboJelly, the creation of Yonas Tadesse and others at the University of Texas at Dallas. The key advance in Parker's Medusoid is its source of power.

RoboJelly used artificial muscles powered by reactions with oxygen and hydrogen. For this new bot, Medusoid, Parker's team built heart cells from a rat into the very fabric of the machine (the rest of the tiny "jellyfish" is made of silicone). Medusoid floats in salt water, and when the scientists send an electric current through the water, the heart cells contract. This pulls in the jelly's body, creating a power stroke that propels it through the water. Once the cells relax, the jellyfish spreads out again.

The idea was to use the rat heart cells to build "engineered muscle" that could mimic a jellyfish's muscle structure. Next, the researchers want to try to give Medusoid a simple "brain" to go along with its locomotive talents.

Google Science Fair: Inspiring Winners in Africa

This year, Scientific American funded the first Science in Action award, a $50,00 prize as part of the Google Science Fair. The prize also includes a year of mentoring to advance the work. The 14-year-old winners, Sakhiwe Shongwe and Bonkhe Malalela, developed a simplified system for hydroponics, which increased crop yields by 140 percent. Their system uses 90 percent waste materials, including old cardboard boxes, sawdust and chicken manure. Their teacher, Titus Mandla Sithole, introduced the Google Science Fair to the classroom earlier this year, and then supported his young charges in developing their project. We asked him about his experiences via email just before he left for the Google Science Fair awards ceremony, which takes place on Monday night.

Tell us a little about your background. How did you become a teacher?

I am Titus Mandla Sithole, 32 years old. I am a teacher at Lusoti High School. I have been teaching here for years, i.e. since I graduated at William Pitcher Teacher Training Colleague, where I obtained a Diploma in Education majoring in Science and Mathematics. I am currently enrolled with UNISA [University of South Africa] pursuing my Bachelor?s degree in Education (Mathematics and Computer Science).

Please tell us about your school and your community.

Lusoti High School is a government school on company grounds. It is within Lusoti village, which is owned by the Royal Swaziland Sugar Corporation. About 50 percent of the learners stay within the village, whereas the other 50 percent commutes to the school. Lusoti is in the Lowveld of Swaziland in a small town called Simunye. The main activity at Simunye is sugar production. Most of the learners who stay within the village are children of company employees. The learners at our school are around 350 ranging, from 12 years to 22 years.? Lessons at the school begin at 07:30 everyday up to 16:00 [4 p.m.].? There is a 20 minutes tea break at 10:00 and an hour?s lunch break at 13:00 [1 p.m.]. On Wednesdays, however, lessons run up to lunchtime and sports commence after lunch up to 16:00.The school has classes from form one to form five.? Each class has two streams, meaning there are 10 streams in the schools.

How did you learn about the Google Science Fair and how did you introduce it to the class?

I was on YouTube in December 2011?not sure of the date?and there was this advert about YouTube Space Lab competition. I clicked there to find out what is all about then found a link to Google Science Fair 2011 Video. I watched the video and then searched more about the GSF from the net. I was very interested in it, as I spent most of my free time learning more from the links in that site and that where I met Scientific American, LEGO and CERN for the first time. I knew about the National Geographic Channel. Today I am a big fan of CERN and Scientific American. And I visit their sites almost every day.

In January, just on the first day of school, I used the PowerPoint presentation GSF prepared for educators to introduce GSF in class. However, I edited it to suit my classes, then encouraged the learners in class to study concepts beyond what they learn in class, in order to be able to conceive project ideas. The majority of the learners said they cannot take part, because working on a project demands a lot of hard work yet they have to do assignments on many subjects on a daily basis. Four projects (teams) come up all from the Junior Classes. But only one, Sakhiwe?s and Bonkhe?s, manage to be completed and submitted before deadline.

Two of the four groups are currently working towards the GSF 2013 are already giving me a lot of pressure in checking their projects. In addition, 50 percent of the school population have come to me once or twice asking if could I help them in their projects?most of which do not even exist yet.

We understand Sakhiwe and Bonkhe were most interested. How did you work with them on their project?

Sakhiwe came with their project concept drafted on paper and sought school facilities and resources to help them work out their project. They needed to use the school?s computers, Internet connection, school?s premises for producing crops, as well as for its safety, as they would work through the night sometimes especially during their project site creation. I had to ensure that they access all the resources they needed from the school and were also safe when working at night by always availing myself when they needed me.

They are good, and what I liked most about them is that I never pushed them to submit anything to me for checking. Instead, they were always pushing and pushing me almost every day, and telling me that they are going to California. To ensure that their ideas are communicated in a clear and simple manner, I ensured that I did read all items they typed before they put them into their Web site.

It?s exciting to work or assist pupils which are self-motivated and knew what they are doing. Being the only group out of four to submit before deadline on its own showed their commitment.

How do you think other teachers can inspire students about science?

Teachers have to emphasize the role of science in improving the lives of human beings on a day to day basis. They must encourage learners to relate every science lesson directly to their life encounters, whether at home, school or community at large. Teachers should use projects as one of the methods of teaching and learning in science. And competition of this nature (GSF) reallygive us teachers a challenge. It is up to teachers to expose their pupils, regardless of backgrounds, and have faith in them.

How can teachers support science-fair projects? What steps should they take?

Teachers must run science fair competitions beginning from the classroom level, where they can get experience winning projects and can then go on to the school level. MILWAUKEE (AP) ? Randy Wolf won his first game since April 30th in the Milwaukee Brewers' 3-2 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals yesterday. Rickie Weeks' fourth-inning home run provided the difference for the Brewers. Francisco Rodriguez picked up a save after manager Ron Roenicke gave him the closer job before the game.

MILWAUKEE (AP) ? Brewers slugger Ryan Braun left yesterday's game with a strained right groin. Braun exited the game in the seventh inning. It's unclear how the injury occurred. Braun was bothered by a right groin injury in May.

CHICAGO (AP) ? Carlos Lee belted a grand slam last night to help the Miami Marlins defeat the Chicago Cubs 9-5. Omar Infante also homered for the Marlins in manager Ozzie Guillen's return to Chicago. Jeff Baker went deep for the Cubs and finished with two RBIs.

CINCINNATI (AP) ? Ryan Ludwick belted a three-run homer last night to help the Cincinnati Reds beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 4-0. Starter Johnny Cueto got the win after pitching six shutout innings. Cincinnati first baseman Joey Votto had surgery earlier in the day to repair torn cartilage in his knee.

Brittany Murphy's death: Dad's case dismissed

Actress Brittany Murphy in December 2006. The cause of the actress' death has been contested by her father, but his legal claims have recently been thrown out.

Today is the 17th anniversary of "Clueless" (can you believe it?!), so what better time than now to take a moment to remember Brittany Murphy.

The 32-year-old "Uptown Girl" passed away Dec. 20, 2009 from pneumonia and anemia, but her father, Angelo Bertolotti, was dissatisfied with the coroner's ruling and filed a lawsuit against the Los Angeles County Department of Coroner in January 2012.

In the suit, the thesp's father sought to obtain biological samples from his daughter's body so that they could be retested.

But now E! News has confirmed Bertolotti's lawsuit has officially been dismissed.

Bertolotti filed the lawsuit against the L.A. coroner's office on Jan. 11, 2012 -- a little over a year since Murphy passed away -- insisting that the coroner's office didn't do its due diligence by performing "only very basic autopsy procedures/toxicology testing."

His original complaint cited a previous medical case where death by arsenic poisoning was erroneously attributed to pneumonia and anemia, and therefore, sought to access his daughter's hair samples from her head, face and body that were in the department's possession.

Not only did Murphy's father dispute the coroner's final conclusion, but he also believed that testing his daughter's hair for poisons, toxins or heavy metals in an independent lab would support his theory that Brittany's cause of death is incorrect.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Elizabeth Allen White threw out the complaint Thursday because neither Bertolotti nor an attorney representing him appeared before her. Camp Bertolotti also failed to show up during a previous hearing on June 19.
