How Are Business Telephone Systems Different From Normal ...

Innovative and technologically advanced phone systems are an essential part of any business. Prior to the development of these leading-edge phone systems, businesses had to use telephones, which lacked effective features and functions that have become critical to current business operations. With ?normal? telephones that operate over copper wires, you just have basic functions such as call waiting, caller ID, call return, and a few other simple features. With a business telephone system, you have many functions and features that can help a business improve productivity and operations.

Today?s business telephone systems are much more advanced than traditional telephones. These modern phone systems have important features and functions that help improve business communications with clients and associates. Features that are available with these systems can include: fax to email, call conferencing, email to fax, voicemail, automatic call distribution, inter office paging, create call queues, call forwarding, custom-menus, auto attendant, music on hold, and much more. Once your company is working with a digital phone system, the possibilities are endless compared to traditional phone systems as new features are being introduced regularly.

When using a business telephone system, you benefit from having everything you need at your fingertips to operate an effective business communication system. All of the features are provided by the business telephone system service provider, which operate over high speed Internet or dedicated telephone networks. The service provided is very economical and is usually billed as a monthly fee. Furthermore with a digital network, your calls will be clearer and connections are quicker than traditional setups. Another key feature to having a digital network is that you can program features for any particular phone without the need for hardware. For example, you can turn certain features on or off for any one particular phone in the office, like the ability to make outgoing calls. With this digital system you retain total control over the entire network.

When a business acquires a telephone system, they benefit from having total control over their phone system. This allows you to direct incoming calls to a specific location, say the front desk or area where the receptionist works. Perhaps you don?t want everyone in the company to be able to reach a certain department or individual, so again programming individual phones allows you total control over the operational phone network. Another benefit of the business telephone system is that it is a cost-effective communication system. For example, rates for outgoing calls to local and long distance locations are less expensive than normal telephones. You can even set up virtual phone numbers without acquiring the physical infrastructure.

When it comes to business operations, the reliable and technologically advanced business phone systems on the market today are critical to ensuring your organizations? operations remain productive and successful. Today, there are companies that specialize in offering business enterprises of all sizes and types telephone systems that will facilitate the needs of the company in their efforts to improve efficiency and maintain competitiveness. Most providers will even help a business with training on the new telephone systems as part of the installation service. They can train an individual or a whole team to work the new business telephone systems and ensure their clients are completely confident in using their new business telephone system.

Recuva

Recuva is a free-for-the-download utility that recovers deleted files from virtually any disk that Windows can read. That means it lets you restore lost files from your hard disk, which probably uses the NTFS file system, or the FAT and exFAT systems used on USB sticks and most storage cards and music players. Recuva is effortless to use, with an attractive interface that you can navigate easily even when you're distracted by the fear that you've lost precious data forever.

In my tests, Recuva didn't recover as many files as its for-purchase-only rival OnTrack Easy Recovery Professional , but it works better than I expected from free software, and it's the kind of program that would be worth buying if its vendor decided to charge for it. Of course, if it rescues your files, you should feel free to send the developer a donation via its website.

Starting to Recuva
Recuva comes in two versions?a normal one that you should install on your system now, before you need it, and a "portable" one that you can install on a USB stick or other external drive. The main advantage of the portable version is that you can install it on an external drive without overwriting any of the free space on your hard drive that may contain exactly the data that you're trying to recover.

Both versions work the same way. A wizard interface asks you whether you want to recover specific types of deleted files, such as pictures, music, or e-mails, or whether you want the program to find any and all deleted files. You then choose whether to scan a specific drive or media card, or whether you want to scan your entire computer. Finally, you get to choose whether or not to use the option for a time-consuming "deep scan" that can take an hour or more on large drives. (My advice: use the "deep scan" option only if the program's basic features don't find your files.)

When the scan is complete, a list of your deleted files appears in the main window. You can right-click on the list to switch from list mode to tree view or a thumbnail view, which displays thumbnail images of some files, but not all. Like (OnTrack Easy Recovery Professional, Recuva doesn't preview PDF files.) Each file is flagged with a green, yellow, or red light, indicating whether the file is recoverable, probably not recoverable, or gone forever. At this point, you can select the files you want to restore, click on the "Recover" button and select? a location on your computer or network where you want the program to copy the recovered files. Unlike OnTrack Easy Recovery Professional, Recuva can't burn your files to an optical disk.

Quirks, Concerns
The whole operation is extremely smooth, but it's worth learning some of the program's quirks before you use it. For example, I'm skeptical about the value of its green-yellow-red color-coding, because it can mislead you into thinking that a file marked "red" is lost forever when it's actually still intact, because the program reports that a file is unrecoverable when, in fact, the "unrecoverable" copy has merely been overwritten with another copy of exactly the same file. (This may happen when the file has been opened and then saved by an application program.) You probably won't be able to figure out that this is what happened to your file until you click a button in Recuva's interface that says "Switch to advanced mode." In advanced mode, you can view an inspector panel for each file, with tabs that display a preview (if the program can create one for the relevant file type), the hex code in the file header, and information about the file itself.

It was only when I looked at the information tab for many of my deleted files that I understood that these "unrecoverable" files were merely older copies of files that still exist on my disk. The files had not been lost at all, but Recuva wasn't smart enough to recognize that the "Unrecoverable" file still existed under the same name. Of course, this problem doesn't cause you to lose data, but it may cause you to panic needlessly until you understand how the program works.

Un-Recuva
Recuva includes a useful feature that does the opposite of recovering a deleted file?a feature that deletes the file securely enough to make it impossible for anything to recover it. The option menu lets you choose different kinds of secure deletion, ranging from single-pass overwriting, which is good enough to hide your file from anyone with access to your computer, to options that tell the program to overwrite the data three or seven times, which is more than enough to secure your data from the FBI or CIA. The program includes a 35-pass option, presumably to satisfy obsessive secret-keepers, ignoring the fact that even the inventor of the 35-pass option, Peter Guttman, says it's a waste of time.

I like free software, and I like Recuva. For most situations where I'll want to recover deleted files?for example, on a family member's hard disk or camera card?it gets the job quickly and easily. But if I worked in a small or large office where lost data means lost money or lost customers, I'd also make sure to have a paid-for copy of OnTrack Easy Recovery Professional handy for files that Recuva, despite its name, can't recover.

(AP) ? James Holmes appeared just as dazed as he did in his first court hearing after the deadly Colorado movie theater massacre.

Holmes, 24, sat silently in a packed Denver-area courtroom on Monday, as a judge told him about the charges filed against him, including murder and attempted murder, in one of the deadliest mass shootings in recent U.S. history.

After the charges were read, prosecutors and defense attorneys sparred over whether a notebook that news reports said Holmes sent to his psychiatrist and had descriptions of the attack was privileged information.

It's an argument that foreshadows one of the case's most fundamental issues: Does Holmes have a mental illness and, if so, what role did it play in the shooting that left 12 people dead and 58 others injured?

Sam Kamin, a law professor at the University of Denver, said there is "pronounced" evidence that the attack was premeditated, which would seem to make an insanity defense difficult. "But," he added, "the things that we don't know are what this case is going to hinge on, and that's his mental state."

In all, prosecutors charged Holmes with 142 counts in the shooting rampage at a midnight showing of the new Batman movie.

Holmes faces two first-degree murder charges for each of the 12 people killed and two attempted first-degree murder charges for every one of the 58 injured in the July 20 shooting.

The maximum penalty for a first-degree murder conviction is death. The multiple charges expand the opportunities for prosecutors to obtain convictions.

"It's a much easier way for the prosecution to obtain a conviction," said Denver defense attorney Peter Hedeen. "They throw as many (charges) up as they can. If you think you can prove it three different ways, you charge it three different ways."

Unlike Holmes' first court appearance July 23, Monday's hearing was not televised. At the request of the defense, District Chief Judge William Sylvester barred video and still cameras from the courtroom, saying expanded coverage could interfere with Holmes' right to a fair trial.

A shackled Holmes did not react as the charges were read. At one point, Holmes, his hair still dyed orange-red, leaned over to speak with one of his lawyers and furrowed his brow. When the judge asked him if he was OK with postponing a hearing so his team could have time to prepare, he said softly: "Yeah."

Some court spectators Monday wore Batman T-shirts. Several people clasped their hands and bowed their heads as if in prayer before the hearing. At least one victim attended, and she was in a wheelchair and had bandages on her leg and arm.

Jessica Watts, whose cousin Jonathan Blunk was killed in the shootings, said in a written statement that she believes in the justice system. "He will be held accountable for his actions and we, Jonny's family, will continue to mourn the hole we now have in our lives," she said.

For the murder charges, one count included murder with deliberation, the other murder with extreme indifference. Both counts carry a maximum death penalty upon conviction; the minimum is life without parole.

In addition, Holmes was charged with one count of possession of explosives and one count of a crime of violence. Authorities said Holmes booby trapped his apartment with the intent to kill any officers responding there the night of the attack.

A conviction under the crime of violence charge means that any sentence, including life terms, would have to be served consecutively, not concurrently, said Craig Silverman, a former chief deputy district attorney in Denver.

That ensures that if laws change in the future, the person convicted would still serve a lengthy sentence, Silverman said.

Analysts expect the case to be dominated by arguments over the defendant's sanity.

Under Colorado law, defendants are not legally liable for their acts if their minds are so "diseased" that they cannot distinguish between right and wrong. However, the law warns that "care should be taken not to confuse such mental disease or defect with moral obliquity, mental depravity, or passion growing out of anger, revenge, hatred, or other motives, and kindred evil conditions."

Holmes' public defenders could argue he is not mentally competent to stand trial, which is the argument offered by lawyers for Jared Loughner, who is accused of killing six people in 2011 in Tucson, Ariz., and wounding several others, including U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords.

If Holmes goes to trial and is convicted, his attorneys can try to stave off a possible death penalty by arguing he is mentally ill.

Prosecutors will decide whether to seek the death penalty in the coming weeks.

Defense attorney Tamara Brady said Monday she will subpoena University of Colorado, Denver, psychiatrist Lynne Fenton, whom Holmes had been seeing, to testify in a dispute over whether the notebook is privileged because of a possible doctor-patient relationship.

Arapahoe County District Attorney Carol Chambers disputed news reports that the notebook contained descriptions of an attack.

On Friday, court papers revealed that Holmes was seeing Fenton. They did not say how long or if it was for a mental illness or another problem. An online resume listed schizophrenia as one of Fenon's research interests.

Holmes' public defenders want to know who leaked the information to the news media. Prosecutors say the notebook was inside a package Holmes reportedly sent to Fenton at the university. Holmes came to the school's competitive neuroscience doctoral program in June 2011 and dropped out a year later.

Authorities seized the package July 23, three days after the shooting, in the mailroom of the medical campus where Holmes studied. A hearing on the matter was set for Aug. 16.

Sylvester set an Aug. 9 hearing on news organizations' motion seeking to unseal the case docket.

Sylvester has tried to tightly control the flow of information about Holmes, placing a gag order on lawyers and law enforcement, sealing the court file and barring the university from releasing public records relating to Holmes' year there.
