U.S. singer Anastacia diagnosed with breast cancer again

MADRID, Feb 27 (Reuters) - Lionel Messi has rarely been accused of failing to deliver in big games, having scored in two European Cup finals, but after subdued performances against AC Milan and Real Madrid, questions are being asked. The four-times World Player of the Year and leading scorer in one of the greatest club teams of all time, was a shadow of his usual self at the San Siro in a Champions League last-16 first leg last week, when Barcelona slumped to a 2-0 defeat. ...

Rambus Binary Pixel brings singleshot HDR photos to phone cameras

Most high dynamic range photography 'cheats' by merging multiple exposures into a composite image, which can lead to blurry shots. While HDR camera technology is catching up and will even let us record HDR video on our smartphones, Rambus believes its new Binary Pixel technology can achieve the effect with less waste. Its new imaging chip tries to replicate the human eye's range through setting light thresholds and oversampling the scene in both space and time. The results are more natural shadows and highlights down to the pixel level, with processing processing fast enough for video. The overall image reportedly suffers from less noise as well. Companies will have to talk to Rambus to implement Binary Pixel, although it's a considered a drop-in technology that should talk to existing processors and camera sensors, whether it's for smartphones or point-and-shoot cameras. Rambus may just want to hurry if it hopes to get noticed -- it's joining an increasingly crowded field.

A Natural Way to Prevent Migraines ? Sharecare.com Blog

For a migraine sufferer, there?s nothing better than a medicine that will make the headache go away ? nothing, that is, except never having the migraine at all. Because let?s face it: Migraine drugs aren?t perfect. They can be pricey, and they can have side effects. What a lot of migraine sufferers don?t realize, though, is that a few simple steps can often work just as well as the drugs, without as much cost or risk. Here are a few moves that may help you control your headaches without so much as looking at your medicine cabinet:

Step 1: Start a food journal. Migraine experts know that some foods may trigger migraines. The biggest culprits are those that contain a relatively high amount of a substance known as tyramine, which can cause headaches by increasing blood pressure. High-tyramine foods include aged cheeses, alcohol, processed meats and red wine. By keeping track, you can learn your triggers, and then avoid them to decrease the number of headaches you suffer.

Step 2: Exercise. A study done in Sweden found that regular exercise can be just as effective at preventing migraines as the drug Topamax. When study participants rode a stationary bike for 40 minutes three times a week, they had as big a reduction in headaches as participants who took 200 milligrams (mg) of Topamax a day. The only difference was that a third of the Topamax users had side effects, while the exercisers had none (unless you count a boost in fitness). Exercise increases endorphins, which may be the mechanism by which it prevents headaches.

Step 3: Try some healthy supplements. A number of studies have found that a daily dose of 400 mg of the B vitamin riboflavin can prevent migraines. It can?t stop one that?s already in progress, but people who take it for three months see their migraines drop by half.

Another nutrient that wards off migraines: magnesium, a common mineral found in beans, pumpkin seeds and nuts. The amount recommended varies according to which expert you ask, ranging from 600 to 1000 mg daily, provided you don?t have kidney problems. A study done in Germany found that when migraine sufferers were given 600 mg magnesium daily for a month, their migraines decreased by more than 40%. Magnesium helps by calming the brain. And there?s a bonus: It?s good for the heart, too.

Moving on to herbs, the herbal extract butterbur has been used for thousands of years for a variety of health issues. Several studies have found that in a dose of 50-75 mgs twice daily, it can reduce the number of migraines by as much as 50%.

With so many promising supplements to choose from, you might wonder what to try first. I generally recommend starting with magnesium and riboflavin. If those don?t help, then I suggest adding butterbur.

In addition, I recommend trying 150 mg daily of coenzyme Q10. In one study, this supplement halved the number of ?migraine days,? probably by improving blood flow in the brain. Studies have also found that 1000 mg daily of omega 3 fatty acids reduce the frequency of migraines by reducing inflammation.? Both of these supplements are good for general health.

These supplements are all generally safe (though, as with any supplement, you should discuss them with your doctor before you start). Whichever you choose, you?ll need to take it regularly for prevention, and you?ll still need your normal remedies for any migraines that do strike. Still, if you?re a migraine sufferer, it?s worth discussing alternatives like these with your doctor. They?re inexpensive, have fewer side effects than many migraine meds ? and just might make your head feel much better.

What?s helped you take control of your migraines? Share your best tips in the box below.

Holy flight plan: Researchers build a robotic bat wing

A robotic bat wing flapping in a university lab is providing researchers with a new appreciation for the wonders of nature and hints at a new generation of mini flapping planes to be deployed on reconnaissance missions.

The robot is modeled after the lesser dog-faced fruit bat and flaps while attached to instruments that measure the forces generated by various joints, allowing the Brown University researchers to calculate the energy required to execute wing movements.

"A lot of my interest in bat flight is in understanding how they fly and in particular how their wing motion influences their aerodynamic force generation," Joseph Bahlman, a graduate student at the university who led the robotic bat project, told NBC News.

The problem is that studying wing motion in live bats is difficult since bats change several parameters at once depending whether they want to fly slower or faster, turn one way or another, or any other aerial maneuver.

"The solutionto that was to build a robotic bat wing that I can then systematically control the motion parameters," Bahlman said.

While detailed experimental results are forthcoming, a case-study experiment showed that by folding the robotic wing on the upstroke, as real bats do, the robot is able to increase net lift by 50 percent.

This type of data could aid the design of small flapping aircraft for recon missions. "Things that are a foot, foot and a half wingspan that you can send into places that aren't safe for people like abandoned mine shafts or to inspect weak spots around bridges," Bahlman said.

Building the robot, Balhman added in a news release, taught the team many lessons ?about how bats work from trying to duplicate them and having things go wrong.?

For example, the joint used to build the robot?s elbow kept ripping apart during test flights, forcing the researchers to wrap it steel cable similar to the way ligaments hold joints together in animals. Real bats, it turns out, have large muscles at the elbow that help prevent the joint for breaking.

Going forward, the team aims to test out different wing materials, aiming to optimize their design. For example, Bahlman told NBC News he wanted to compare a stretchy membrane like a live bat wing with a non-stretchy material. He suspects the stretchy skin of bat wings enhances flight performance.

"There are just tons of questions," he said. "This made for just a really powerful research tool."

If this research is ultimately paired with other bat-inspired technology, such as an echolocation-based navigation tool that recently allowed a blind college to ride a mountain bike, future robots will be quite batty indeed.

A paper describing the robot was published in the journal Bioinspiration and Biomimetics.

Britain's schools to use crowdfunding to go for solar energy ...

Crowdfunding Solar Schools In Britain?http://www.energymatters.com.au/index.php?main_page=news_article&article_id=3606, 22 Feb 13, ?Schools in the UK wanting to go solar but that are strapped for cash are able to participate in a new crowdfunding service.

??As was the case in Australia, UK schools were previously able to benefit from generous government incentives to install solar; but most of that support has now dried up and the situation is preventing many schools from accessing solar power.

SolarSchools?provides resources, training and staff support to help schools raise funds for a solar array. Each school is also provided with a web page on the Solar Schools site to showcase their project and act as a rallying point for fundraising.

Each school?s page features a representation of solar panels and each solar panel is split up into tiles. Donors sponsor a cell with a ?5 donation. When a donation is made, the cell is replaced with an image or avatar representing the donor. Once the funding target is reached, construction of the solar array can begin.

?It?s a chance for pupils, parents, local businesses, former students and everyone else to do something good for their school, their community, and the whole world,? states the Solar Schools web site.

Last month, Barnes Primary School in Richmond was the first school to reach its funding target of ?10,000.

Solar Schools is run by 10:10, a grassroots movement seeking to inspire all sections of society to cut carbon emissions.

Solar power systems are a way for schools to take practical action to reduce emissions and electricity bills, while providing educational benefits for students in learning about renewable energy and environmental stewardship. Additionally, schools with solar panels?installed act as inspiration for students to enter into clean energy careers.

While Australia?s National Solar Schools Program (NSSP) is no longer accepting applications, given the substantial reduction in solar power equipment costs and increasing electricity prices; solar still provides a viable way for schools to reduce their running costs.

Rodriguez Seeks Lost Royalties From Albums Sold Overseas While He Lived In Obscurity

JOHANNESBURG ? The story of Sixto Rodriguez, the greatest protest singer and songwriter that most people never heard of, is a real-life fairytale with a Hollywood finale.

In his latest incarnation, the guitarist has unwittingly become a champion for the rights of wronged musicians.

The Detroit construction worker whose albums flopped in the United States in the 1970s wants to know what happened to royalties in South Africa, where he unknowingly was elevated to rock star status.

While Rodriguez toiled in the Motor City, white liberals thousands of miles across the Atlantic Ocean burdened by the horrors of the apartheid regime were inspired by his songs protesting the Vietnam War, racial inequality, abuse of women and social mores.

Songs composed half a century ago that some equate to "inner-city poetry" still are relevant today: Like his poke at the pope's stance on birth control, and his plaints about corrupt politicians and bored housewives.

In South Africa, they were massive and enduring hits that still sell today, considered standards like Paul Simon's "Bridge over Troubled Waters," according to Stephen "Sugar" Segerman, a Cape Town record store owner whose nickname comes from the Rodriguez song "Sugarman."

"He's more popular than Elvis" in South Africa, Segerman said in an interview.

For decades, Rodriguez remained in the dark. Now the heartwarming documentary "Searching for Sugar Man," which tells of two South Africans' mission to seek out the fate of their musical hero, has been nominated for an Oscar.

The film by Swedish filmmaker Malik Bendjelloul and the story behind it have proved transformative for several people, not least Rodriguez, who is on a worldwide tour that has included New York's Carnegie Hall and London's Royal Albert Hall.

Even after the extent of his fame was brought home to him when he first toured South Africa to sold-out concerts 15 years ago, Rodriguez had said he had no interest in pursuing the money, holding true to his lyrics "And you can keep your symbols of success, Then I'll pursue my own happiness."

Now, he is not so sure: that people were profiting off his music doesn't sit well with him. He plans to seek legal resolution for the lost royalties, though he's not certain where to start.

"I think omission is a sin. Withholding evidence is unethical to say the least, but I'll resolve that," Rodriguez said in an interview with The Associated Press in a Detroit bar, months before the documentary was nominated. "These were licensed releases, not just bootlegs. ... It's in the process, but I have to get to a position to see what jurisdiction I approach. I'm ignorant. ... How do you do this?"

How, indeed? South Africa was under U.N. economic and cultural sanctions from the 1960s. While some Rodriguez songs were banned by the apartheid regime and many bootlegged copies were made on tapes and later CDs, three local labels reproduced Rodriguez's two albums under license, the 1970 "Cold Fact" and 1972 "Coming from Reality: After the Fact."

No one knows how many sold. In the documentary, Robbie Mann of RPM Records estimates that, under his father, the South African company sold "maybe half a million copies." Some estimate more than 1 million were sold in all.

South Africans interviewed in the documentary said they sent royalty checks to the United States, to the now-defunct Sussex Records label of former Motown executive Clarence Avant. The Hollywood record producer starts off emotional in the documentary, calling Rodriguez "my boy" and "greater than Bob Dylan."

But he's short-tempered when asked about the royalties, saying he cannot be expected to remember details of a 1970s contract and album that he suggests didn't sell more than three copies in the United States.

The 81-year-old Avant, who could not be reached for this article, still owns the rights to the music and is now being paid for them by Light In The Attic Records, which gives a new life to old recordings, according to Segerman, who acts as an unofficial publicist for Rodriguez. He said the 2008 and 2009 releases were the first time Rodriguez was paid royalties.

Now you can buy Rodriguez songs on iTunes, and the documentary soundtrack released by Light In The Attic in conjunction with Sony Legacy.

Segerman said Rodriguez has "created a whole new consciousness about robbing an artist." People coming into his Malibu Vinyl shop and sending him emails say "I want to buy it, not download it for free, but please, I want to make sure he's going to get the money."

"Here's the irony: His music came into South Africa through bootlegging but it's South Africa that's given him the voice to say `This is wrong!' and people get that, they understand now."

He said at least 200,000 copies of both albums have sold in the last year or so.

But Rodriguez appears untouched by the money, Segerman said. Now in his 70s with failing eyesight, Rodriguez continues to live in the same old house he's occupied for decades in Detroit, and gives most of the money away to relatives and friends, said Segerman.

In South Africa in the old days, his fans isolated by sanctions and censorship believed Rodriguez was as famous at home as he was in their country. They heard stories that the musician had died dramatically: He'd shot himself in the head onstage in Moscow; He'd set himself aflame and burned to death before an audience someplace else; He'd died of a drug overdose, was in a mental institution, was incarcerated for murdering his girlfriend.

In 1996, in the newly liberated South Africa, Segerman and journalist Carl Bartholomew-Strydom set out separately to find out the truth and then got together to solve the mystery. Nearly two years of frustration and dead ends finally led to Detroit, where they found Rodriguez ? sane, free and working on construction sites in his home town.

"It's rock-and-roll history now. Who would-a thought?" Rodriguez said, struggling to explain his improbable tale even several months before the documentary was nominated for an Oscar. How does an anonymous laborer in the Motor City who failed to make it in folk music unknowingly became a mysterious musical prophet in South Africa? And how does the persistence of two fans thousands of miles and an ocean away lead to redemption and a Hollywood-style victory for his long-ignored talent?

Those who produced his records could not believe they flopped. "This guy was like a wise man, a prophet, I've never worked with anyone as talented," Steve Rowland, who produced hits for Jerry Lee Lewis and Peter Frampton, says in the documentary. He produced Rodriguez's second and last album.

Rodriguez was the first artist signed to Sussex Records. Its second was Bill Withers.

Rodriguez said he wasn't wallowing in self-pity after his music career fizzled ? he just "went back to work." He raised a family that includes three daughters, launched several unsuccessful campaigns for public office, obtained a philosophy degree and reverted to manual labor in Detroit. He gave up the dream of living off his music but never stopped playing it.

"I felt I was ready for the world, but the world wasn't ready for me," Rodriguez said. "I feel we all have a mission ? we have obligations," he said. "Those turns on the journey, different twists ? life is not linear."

Chevrolet SS Sedan Not Heading to Canada

The all-new Chevrolet SS sedan will not be heading to Canada, General Motors has confirmed.

Going on sale later this year in America, Canadians won?t be able to enjoy the new 415 hp, 415 lb-ft of torque SS that?s powered by the American automaker?s 6.2-liter V8 engine.

The announcement comes as a surprise to those north of the border as the car?s predecessor, the Pontiac G8, was offered in the true north strong and free.

The SS sedan won?t be the only model that has a discrepancy between the American and Canadian markets. In Canada, Chevrolet offers the Trax and Orlando, both of which aren?t available in America. But in this case, Canada is definitely getting the short end of the stick. Americans surely aren?t sulking over not being able to buy a Trax or Orlando.

At $47,802, Oscar goodie bag skimpiest in 5 years

Adrees Latif / Reuters

Even if Jennifer Lawrence doesn't bring home an Oscar on Sunday, she'll still get to keep a $47,802 goodie bag.

By Martha C. White

A gold statue is nice, but Hollywood A-listers nominated for Oscars will get a consolation prize even if they don?t win: a $47,802 goodie bag.

That?s about the same as the MSRP for an entry-level Mercedes Benz M class (and it?s within shouting distance of America?s 2011 median household income of $50,054). Still, it?s the least-expensive this gift bag has been in five years; in 2010, Oscar swag topped $90,000.

?I am confident that having a $48,000 gift bag vs. a $58,000 gift bag will go unnoticed by Amy Adams, Hugh Jackman and Jennifer Lawrence,? Lash Fary, founder of marketing firm Distinctive Assets, which has put together the "Everyone Wins at the Oscars?" gift bag for the past 11 years, said via email.

There?s still plenty of swag that evokes the typical A-list lifestyle: a $4,100 weeklong weight-loss retreat, $406 hand cream, a $795 water filtration device and and $1,800 pass to the VIP club at London's Heathrow airport.

Others are quirkier and cheaper, albeit more practical, like a $19.99 clothing de-fuzzer and a $3.99 cleaning product from Windex. There is even a six-pack of condoms valued at $20.

Fary said a smaller number of big-ticket vacation packages contributed to the lower overall value of this year?s gift bag. ?This year, we had more physical items than in past years. ?The past couple years we included more trips and gift certificates and decided to scale that back a bit this year,? he said. ?Redeeming 12 trips in one year is difficult for anyone ? let alone a busy celebrity.?

There are still some trips included in this year?s gift bag, including a choice of one of two $12,000 Australian vacations either on the Great Barrier Reef or in the Outback. There?s also a $7,400 gift certificate for interior decorating services, among others.

The appeal for companies is that they?ll score publicity if a red-carpet fixture like Robert De Niro or Sally Field uses, eats or wears their offering. This exposure is invaluable, which makes Academy Awards swag big business.

?Part of the good news about all the attention we receive during Oscar week is that we get a lot of last-minute inquiries about being added to the bags, and sometimes the company is able to mobilize to make it happen,? Fary said. Companies pay between $4,000 and $20,000 to participate, not including the cost of the items they donate.

In addition to the ?Everyone Wins? gift bag, there are gifting suites like the GBK Luxury Gift Lounge and the Oscar Celebrity Gifting Suite, not to be confused with Connected's Pre-Oscar Celebrity Gifting Suite.

Courtenay Madsen, owner of jewelry start-up Courtenay J Designs, spent about $1,250 to contribute 100 hand-stamped, sterling silver and copper necklaces for the GBK Luxury Gift Lounge, which totaled about a third of her annual marketing budget.

?The cost was definitely a factor,? she said. ?I had to watch every single penny.?

Madsen said she?s hoping for payoff in the form of a celebrity shout-out on Twitter, which could help grow her wholesale business. ?A ?lot of times the actor?s fan base will click on your information,? she said. ?You have a little bit more credibility... other people start to take notice.?

?It takes quite a lot of work and time and effort to make it happen,? said Julian Harrison, president of Premier Tours, which donated a $45,000 African safari to the ?Everybody Wins? gift bag in 2010 and had participated for the past four years. His company isn?t giving away a trip this year, but he said, ?More than likely, we will be back next year.?

Pakistan condemns deadly bombings in India

Press TV ? February 22, 2013

Pakistan has condemned the twin deadly bomb explosions in the Indian city of Hyderabad which left at least 20 people dead.

?Terrorism in all its forms and manifestations constitutes one of the most serious threats to international peace and security,? Pakistan?s Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

?Being itself a victim of terrorism, Pakistan fully understands and shares the pain and agony of the people of India. Our prayers and thoughts are with the families of victims of this terrorist attack,? the statement added.

A bomb went off on Thursday evening near a popular cinema called Venkatadri Cinema in the district of Dilsukh Nagar which is one of the largest commercial centers in Hyderabad. Minutes later, a second blast took place next to a nearby bus stop.

Indian police have said that they had been informed of plans for a possible attack in the Hyderabad area last year.

?We interrogated two militants [from the Indian Mujahideen group], who said they had recced (reconnoitered) various spots in Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Pune for a possible attack. One of the places they mentioned was Dilsukh Nagar, which was hit last night,? said S.N. Shrivastava, a Delhi police commissioner.

According to reports, since 1992, at least nine bomb blasts have rocked Heydarabad including three bomb explosions in 2007 that claimed the lives of at least 51 people.

In 2008, the Indian city of Mumbai came under a bomb attack. India accused the Pakistan-based militant group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) of training, equipping, and financing those responsible for the killings of at least 166 people with support from ?elements? in the Pakistani military.

Islamabad admitted that the attacks were partly planned on its soil, but has firmly denied allegations of any official involvement.

US 'pivot to Asia': Is John Kerry retooling it?

When John Kerry spoke at his confirmation hearing to become secretary of State, Asia experts took notice when he seemed to back away from a key aspect of President Obama's vaunted "pivot" to Asia.

"I'm not convinced that increased military ramp-up [in the Asia-Pacific] is critical yet," Mr. Kerry said at the January hearing. "That's something I'd want to look at very carefully."

The "rebalancing" of America's focus and resources ? away from the Middle East and toward a rising Asia ? was considered part of the legacy of Kerry's predecessor, Hillary Rodham Clinton. China had been put on notice that the United States was reasserting itself as an Asia-Pacific power. But was Kerry suggesting, as some surmised, that the US would now focus more on engagement with a rising China? Was he signaling that the "pivot to Asia" is no longer a guiding priority?

RECOMMENDED: How much do you know about China? Take our quiz.

Or, as a senior State Department official suggests, was Kerry simply saying that the US, which has played a key role in Asia's security and prosperity for decades, will be cautious not to do anything that might jostle the region? "Anything that could upset [what we've helped accomplish in Asia] has to be looked at very carefully" ? including a potentially unsettling military buildup, says the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Whether the Asia pivot is "real or rhetoric" will be answered in the coming months, regional analysts say ? as the US addresses the simmering territorial disputes in the seas of Southeast Asia, as it signals the diplomatic attention it intends to give the region, and as it moves ahead, or not, on an ambitious regional trade pact called the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP).

For US officials, the pivot never meant turning toward something new, since the US has been a Pacific power for more than a century. Rather, they describe it as "refocusing" on the world's most economically dynamic region. And they say the US is taking concrete steps to make the pivot a reality.

Want your top political issues explained? Get customized DC Decoder updates.

In November 2011, Mr. Obama announced plans for up to 2,500 US Marines to be stationed in Australia ? a first for the US. And by 2020, 60 percent of the US naval fleet will be deployed to the Asia-Pacific, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta announced last June.

On the diplomatic front, Mrs. Clinton pressed ahead with building up "institutional architecture" for US-China relations, establishing regular high-level meetings.

She also ramped up US involvement elsewhere in the region, particularly with Southeast Asia ? a strategic focus for both the US and China. Clinton made a point of attending forums of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) every year of her tenure ? a first for a secretary of State.

In addition, Obama had the US join a new grouping ? the East Asia Summit (EAS) ? and he attended the summit two years in a row. Obama also hosted the first US-ASEAN Summit, held in Singapore in 2009, and then attended annual ASEAN summits, as well as Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summits.

This bump-up of attention to the region by the US president does not go unnoticed by leaders, says Michael Green, a senior Asia adviser in the George W. Bush administration who is now at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington.

"The president's commitment to the EAS may be the most lasting dimension of the pivot," he says.

For some US diplomats, a crucial factor in making the pivot more than rhetoric is the number of largely unseen working groups and other contacts being established on issues that range from trade and investment to e-trade security. Their goal is to boost the region's prosperity while making the US an integral part of it.

So far, the "ramp-up" in economic contacts has largely been accomplished by "juggling" existing resources, but requests in the 2014 budget are based in part on adding new "slots" in both Washington and the region, the senior State Department official says.

"We are taking advantage of revenues that will be somewhat freed up" by the "rebalancing" of resources from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the official says.

Yet despite this evidence of a redirection, it remains unclear if what began in Obama's first term will carry over full force into his second, many regional analysts say. "Clearly the meaning of the pivot a year and a half ago is different from its meaning today," says Dean Cheng, a research fellow at The Heritage Foundation's Asian Studies Center in Washington.

"Secretary Kerry seemed to be saying in his confirmation statement [that] we don't need a pivot," he adds. "We'll see in the months ahead if the political and military and economic attention we give the Asia-Pacific region confirms that that's what he meant."

One significant question, Mr. Green says, is the defense budget ? whether cuts can be made while keeping the envisioned redeployment of forces to the Asia-Pacific.

Another important indication of where the pivot is headed will come when Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe travels to the White House Feb. 22.

Mr. Abe ? who has made no secret since his election in December of the priority he places on revitalizing relations with the US ? visits as a territorial dispute between Japan and China over a collection of uninhabited islets (the Senkaku, or Diaoyu) heats up.

How far Obama goes in supporting Japan, with whom the US has a security treaty, will say a lot about how the US wants China to interpret its role in the region, some say.

But other signals out of the White House will be just as important, regional analysts say ? such as who makes up the administration's Asia team. Asia analysts want to see who replaces Kurt Campbell, the recently departed assistant secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs, who worked closely with Clinton to move the Asia pivot beyond rhetoric.

The region will be watching, too. "In the Chinese view, the pivot was identified with Mrs. Clinton," says Mr. Cheng of Heritage. "Her departure and that of Kurt Campbell will be seen as a weakening, a diluting of the pivot."

Another indicator will be what happens this year with the TPP, a new trade group being negotiated by 11 Pacific Rim countries, including the US. Negotiators have set a deadline of September for reaching an accord, which many say could serve as a template for extending trade agreements across the region.

[iPhone] Traveling Abroad with iPhone 4S: PLEASE HELP!

To anyone who takes the time to help; thank you.

Quick Facts:
- iPhone 4S
- iOS 6.0.1 (10A523)

I am traveling to Mexico for 4 weeks time. At&t international add on plan rates are pretty steep in price. I was hoping by jailbreaking my phone with the new jailbreak that is out and then unlocking my phone I would be able to then purchase an appropriate SIM card in my destination city that would be able to provide me with talking minutes/data/text.

Is there anyone that has done this before, is familiar with the process, or can just explain to me in a concise way how to go about this. I really appreciate any input/time.

Thank you.

PFT: Cowboys reportedly begin talks with Romo

350x-1Getty Images

The Dallas Cowboys have been interested for months in extending the contract of franchise quarterback Tony Romo.? And after months of dragging their feet, it appears that Romo?s camp at least is willing to listen.

Cowboys executive V.P. Stephen Jones tells 105.3 The Fan in Dallas that talks aimed at adding years to Romo?s deal ? and in turn reducing his $16.8 million cap number for 2013 ? have commenced.

?We have a great quarterback and he deserves to be paid,?? Jones said.? ?We have a good quarterback and we want to reward him.? He?s in the last year of a contract and our goal is to not let the quarterback run out of contract.??

For now, Jones characterizes the talks as ?informal.?? And in the hopes of making them more formal, Jones appears to be trying to lay the salary-cap guilt trip on Romo.

?I think on this particular situation with Tony is we think we have a great quarterback and we want him to be our quarterback here for the next four to five years,? Jones said.? ?When you have a good one and you?re fortunate enough to have a good one, then he?s going to take up the biggest part of your cap space, so you have to be partners with one another and you have to do things.? No one wants to win more, no one wants to have success more than Tony.? He knows in order to do that we have to manage our cap and he plays a big part in that because the percentage of the cap that he takes.??

Romo?s current deal can?t be ?restructured? because there?s only one year left on it.? The cap number will drop only if the parties extend the deal to cover future years.? But Romo has no reason to extend the contract without receiving a large chunk of cash.

When the Cowboys wanted to talk contract during the 2012 season, Romo?s reps resisted, sensing that the team simply wanted to buy low.? And the Cowboys may still try to low ball Romo, whose leverage increases with the jump in his cap number.

If Romo is willing to shoulder the risk of injury, he can ride out the final year of his deal, forcing the Cowboys to use the franchise tag in 2014.? Based on his 2013 cap number, it would cost the Cowboys $20.16 million to keep him next season.

For that reason, Romo should be seeking a minimum guaranteed payment of $36.96 million, which is the sum of what he?ll make over the next two seasons.

Adding a third season to that package, and Romo?s pay for 2015 under the franchise tag would be $24.192 million.? That pushes his three-year haul to more than $61 million.

UBC to once again host Canada vs. Italy in Davis Cup tennis

Tennis Canada is expected to announce Tuesday that the next round in Canada?s Davis Cup quest will again be played at the University of B.C.?s Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre.

The national team is returning to the same city where Canada defeated No. 1-ranked Spain Feb. 1-3 to advance to the quarter-finals of the Davis Cup for the first time. Canada will play Italy, first-round winners over Croatia, in the next World Group tie, April 5-7.

A good tip-off that Canada-Italy was slated for Vancouver was the short turnaround time following the last tie against Spain. The acrylic-topped, hard-court surface favoured by Canada?s ace, Milos Raonic, never left the building. It?s the same composition used at the ATP?s SAP Open in San Jose, won by Raonic for the third straight time Sunday, with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Tommy Haas of Germany.

Kavie Toor, the associate director of facilities and business development for UBC Athletics and Recreation, said the surface was boxed up and stored at the Thunderbird Sports Centre immediately after Canada?s win against Spain. That victory was secured when Raonic won his second singles match, with a straight-sets victory over Spain?s Guillermo Garcia-Lopez.

Toor said the organizational and logistical pieces are already in place to make the next Davis Cup tie virtually a turnkey operation. The International Tennis Federation requires a tennis venue of at least 6,000 seats for quarter-final play in the Davis Cup. Thunderbird Sports Centre, with the addition of some temporary seating, maxed out at 6,214 seats for the recent tie against Spain.

?There?s always something to be said for winning a (Davis Cup) round and coming back to the same place under the same conditions,? said Gavin Ziv, tournament director for Tennis Canada.

?You?d probably be looking at indoor conditions in early April anywhere in Canada except, possibly, Vancouver. But probably the biggest factor is the country we?re playing against. What surface gives our players the best chance to win? Our

No. 1 goal is to win.

?Sometimes you might be leaving money on the table by not going to a bigger venue. But that?s OK. Having a good, loud home crowd will help our guys win. That?s one reason why they love playing in Vancouver.?

Canada moved up four spots in the Davis Cup World Cup rankings to No. 8 following its win over Spain, which was without three of his brightest singles stars ? Rafael Nadal, David Ferrer and Nicolas Almagro.

Italy, ranked No. 9 in the world, defeated Croatia 3-2 in its first-round tie just over two weeks ago on indoor clay at the Palavela in Turin.

Canadian captain Martin Laurendeau noted that playing on the road can hamper even the best teams, especially ones playing out of their element, on a surface of the home team?s choosing. The Italians, like the Spaniards, favour the clay court surfaces which dominate in Europe.

The Canadian team should be deeper than the squad that defeated Spain with the addition of ATP top 100 player Jesse Levine, an Ottawa native who moved with his family to Florida at age 13.

Levine applied to the ITF for reinstatement as a Canadian in December and will have served out a mandatory 90-day waiting period for the change by the time of the Italy tie.

Levine, Vasek Pospisil of Vancouver and Frank Dancevic of Niagara Falls, Ont., are expected to compete for the second singles spot on the Canadian team behind Raonic.

Dancevic, in an otherworldly state of mind, blew out Marcel Granollers, the world No. 32,

6-1, 6-2, 6-2 in the second singles match of the first day to give Canada an unexpected 2-0 lead over Spain. At the time, Dancevic was ranked 132 spots lower than Granollers.

BUSM authors propose potential epigenetic mechanisms for improved cancer therapy

(Boston) A review article by researchers at Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM) proposes a new epigenetic hypothesis linked to tumor production and novel ideas about what causes progenitor cells to develop into cancer cells. Published in the February 2013 issue of Epigenomics, the article provides examples of how epigenetic drug treatments could be beneficial in treating cancers while also decreasing the likelihood of cancer relapse.

The article was written by researchers at the Boston University Cancer Center. Sibaji Sarkar, PhD, adjunct instructor of medicine at BUSM, is the article's corresponding author.

Cancer is a complex disease characterized by uncontrolled cell growth, division and invasion into other tissues. A 2004 review article published in Nature Medicine suggests that epigenetics, which is the phenomena whereby genetically identical cells express their genes differently resulting in different phenotypes and other factors play an important role in the formation of cancer originating from cancer stem cells.

Sarkar and colleagues propose that epigenetic processes, specifically DNA methylation, may trigger cancer progenitor cell formation from somatic cells in coordination with other cellular and environmental events. DNA methylation is a process that changes the DNA and causes genes to be silenced. In the absence of definitive proof of the existence of cancer stem cells, this hypothesis discusses a possible explanation for the formation and existence of cells that may develop into cancer. The researchers also explore why only some individuals develop cancer, despite identical genetic predispositions.

In cancer cells, the enzyme that maintains high levels of methylation in tumor suppressor genes is highly expressed, allowing uncontrolled growth. At the same time, many oncogenes, or genes with the potential to cause cancer, are activated and have lower levels of methylation. The apparent anomaly of the existence of both low and high rates of methylation could be explained with either the compartmentalization of these two processes and/or by the existence of both a methylation and demethylation system operating simultaneously at specific locations with the help of various accessory proteins.

The authors hypothesize the existence of both DNA methylating and demethylating enzymes in cells that regulate the methylation and demethylation process. Accessory proteins and/or small RNA factors could lead these enzymes to their sites of actions, resulting in some genes remaining methylated and others not methylated simultaneously within the same cellular environment. DNA sequences around the regions that are methylated and demethylated may also play role in these events. During drug treatments, the demethylating system dominates while the methylating enzyme is down-regulated, resulting in re-expression of silenced genes.

Recent studies have shown that epigenetic drug treatments prior to and with standard chemotherapy reduce the chance of cancer relapse.

"Progenitors are known to cause cancer relapse, and because epigenetic drugs can help destroy progenitor cells, these drugs could help reduce the chance of cancer relapse and improve the long-term outcomes of people with cancer," said Sarkar. "While our hypotheses are based on current knowledge, we are proposing important and exciting areas to be explored in the future."

Former NC State coach Lowe arrested on tax charges

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) ? Former North Carolina State basketball coach Sidney Lowe was arrested Monday and charged with failing to file his North Carolina state income taxes for three years.

Lowe didn't file returns in 2009, 2010 and 2011 ? the last three years he coached the Wolfpack, according to the state Department of Revenue. He was booked at the Wake County jail Monday and released on a $10,000 unsecured bond on the misdemeanor charges.

Lowe is currently an assistant coach for the Utah Jazz. A spokesman said the team was aware of reports about Lowe's arrest but had no comment. Lowe also couldn't be reached for comment, and it wasn't known if he had an attorney.

Lowe kept his home in Wake Forest, north of Raleigh, even after taking the job with the Jazz, authorities said. He ignored a television reporter's request for comment Monday as he walked out of the home and entered an airport taxi.

Lowe was one of the most beloved players in N.C. State history for his role as starting point guard on the "Cardiac Pack" team that won the 1983 NCAA championship. He returned to Raleigh in 2006 to replace Herb Sendek as coach, but the Wolfpack struggled to sustain any momentum in Lowe's five seasons. He never made the NCAA tournament as a coach.

The Wolfpack never finished higher than ninth in the Atlantic Coast Conference under Lowe. He went 86-78, including just 25-55 in ACC play. Lowe was 3-16 record against rivals Duke and North Carolina, with two of those wins coming in his first year.

Lowe twice reached the NIT. He resigned in 2011 and the school hired current coach Mark Gottfried.

Lowe also spent five years as an NBA head coach in Minnesota and Memphis, compiling a 79-228 record.

In lurid Ariz case, woman describes victim as liar

(AP Photo/Ross D. Franklin, File)

PHOENIX (AP) ? Jodi Arias has been on the witness stand for more than a week, recounting one intimate detail of her life after another. Salacious revelations of sexual antics. Tales of deviance, betrayal and bad decisions. An abusive childhood. Dead-end restaurant jobs, high school boyfriends, movies and cooking.

But after six days, she still hasn't mentioned the killing of her one-time boyfriend Travis Alexander in 2008, how she repeatedly stabbed and slashed him, slit his throat, then shot in him the head. And for good reason, experts say.

Defense attorneys want to elicit sympathy from jurors in hopes they spare Arias a first-degree murder conviction that could lead to the death penalty. At the same time, they are working to portray Alexander as a philanderer and hypocrite who in public led friends and family to believe he was a devout Mormon saving himself for marriage while simultaneously having sex with multiple women.

So while the seemingly redundant and irrelevant testimony may be lost on the casual observer, veteran criminal defense lawyer Michael Cardoza says there's a reason: Make the jury feel sorry for Arias and disgusted by the victim's antics.

"They're making it very difficult for the jury to put her to death because they're getting to know her," Cardoza said. "The job of the defense at this point isn't to walk her out of the courtroom. Their job is to keep her from getting the death penalty."

The result has been a provocative courtroom drama made for tabloid headlines as the public watches the trial through real time web feeds that have seen huge spikes in traffic, especially on a day when jurors heard a lurid phone sex chat between Arias and Alexander.

"It really taxed our servers. We got an incredible amount of traffic that day," said Michael Williams, chief technology officer at www.wildabouttrial.com, a website and mobile app devoted to criminal trial coverage.

Arias, 32, claims Alexander battered her into submission, and finally, forced her to fight for her life in self-defense. Prosecutors say she killed Alexander in a jealous rage.

In graphic detail, Arias has described for jurors instances of physical abuse at the hands of Alexander. She said he belittled her and admitted to having sexual desires for young boys. She has spent an equal amount of time detailing her own troubled life, from an abusive childhood to her religious beliefs to the minutia of ex-boyfriends and car problems.

She broke down in tears, her head slumped over, as she sat on the witness stand and listened to the hour-long phone sex recording played for jurors in open court, as Alexander's family winced in the gallery and her own mother sat emotionless across the room. The judge warned observers of the explicit nature of the tape prior to playing it, and offered everyone a chance to leave. No one did.

Cardoza said he's never heard anything so salacious in a courtroom.

"This tops it all, absolutely tops it all," he said.

The trial has been crawling along as each day is interrupted by multiple objections and private bench conferences, something experts say is by design as Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Sherry Stephens, a former Arizona assistant attorney general, wants to be certain the record is clean of anything that could be used on appeal.

"The ferocity of the killing is just so staggering," said Phoenix defense attorney Mel McDonald, a former judge and federal prosecutor. "It's just so poisonous, the acts of the killing, that I think the judge is doing everything to give Jodi Arias' attorneys great latitude, and I think it's an absolutely savvy decision. ... The state is asking for the ultimate penalty of death, after all."

But as Arias demonizes the victim, there's been little more than her words to back up anything.

She never called police or went to a hospital for injuries she claims she suffered at Alexander's hands, and jurors have yet to hear from any witnesses or view any evidence establishing a history of the victim's violence or supposed interest in child pornography. She is likely to face a withering cross-examination from the prosecution next week.

The trial began in early January with the prosecution making quick work of its case, a seamless and largely chronological story laid out for jurors in simple detail: Arias is a murderer, a jilted lover who planned the attack on Alexander in a jealous rage. She stabbed and slashed him 27 times, slitting his throat and shooting him in the head in a final salvo of savagery.

The sheer brutality of the attack is difficult enough for defense lawyers to explain away in a case where the defendant claims self-defense. There are also the lies. Arias initially told authorities she wasn't there. She later blamed it on masked intruders. Eventually, she settled on self-defense, claiming Alexander attacked her in his suburban Phoenix home.

Investigators also say Alexander was shot in the head with a .25 caliber gun, the same caliber Arias' grandparents reported stolen from their Northern California home about a week before the killing. No weapons have been recovered, and Arias hasn't explained what she did with them.

"She can say whatever she wants, but Travis isn't here to speak for himself," said Julie Haslem, a friend of Alexander who has been watching the trial. "It's bad enough that she took his life. Now she's trying to take his reputation, too."

Testimony resumes Tuesday.
