Chicago State Women's Track And Field Preview

??? Chicago State women's track and field head coach Craig Collins knows that in collegiate competition, each meet is more challenging and more difficult than the previous week. The question is, does his freshman realize it yet?
?? ??It's a different season for the freshmen now and every meet is going to be like the state meet,? Collins said. ?They will have to bring the intensity needed for each meet. Our workouts have prepared them for that but they will have to translate that intensity into competition.?
?? ?Junior Sharifah Robertson is the captain of the women's squad and as a sprinter she guides a group which Collins believes can make a big impact in 2013.
?? ??Sharifah is the leader of the team and will do well this year,? Collins said. ?We'll see her in the 60 and eventually outdoors in the 100.?
?? ?Robertson will also see time in the 200, but so could freshman Alisha Wren and sophomore Pearl Chitava. In the 400, look for Chitava, Wren and freshman Joshlynn Scott. Twin sister Jusilya Scott will also compete in the 800. This group will make up the core of Chicago State's relay entries.
?? ??We're going to be able to bring it all together in the relays,? Collins said. ?We're going to be really tough in the 4x400 outdoors and the 4x100 indoors.?
?? ?Freshman Danielle Dugain is a sprinter, but she will also compete in the hurdles.
?? ??Danielle is going to develop as the year goes on and as she transitions from indoor to outdoor,? Collins said. ?Her best event is going to be the 400 hurdles.?
?? ?The Cougars are strong in the throws thanks to junior Jaya Emerson. Last season Emerson won the shot put title at the Great West Conference Indoor Championships with a throw of 13.49.
?? ??I expect her to repeat as indoor champion in the shot this year,? Collins said. ?She is getting better in all the weight throws and I'm looking for her to transfer her success to the outdoor hammer throw this year.?
?? ?One wild card this year could be senior Sydney Van Munster. She is finished with her volleyball eligibility and can now focus only on track and field. She will compete in the javelin as well as the high jump.
?? ??Sydney is a great athlete,? Collins said. ?Now that she is finished with volleyball we're going to try to position her in the right events so she can focus solely on them.?
?? ?All of the team's hard work builds up to the GWC Indoor Championships (Feb. 22-23) and Outdoor Championships (May 3-5). Both events will be hosted by Houston Baptist University.
