PFT: Peyton improving, will increase rehab

Peyton Manning says he?s getting better at a rather important part of playing quarterback ? throwing the football ? as he continues his recovery from neck surgery.

?We have some more questions to answer,? Manning told reporters in the Colts? locker room today, one day after the Colts announced that he had moved to the next phase in his rehab. ?We have some things I haven?t been allowed to do. Now we can do a little more. Throwing ? that?s what you?re asking me ? yeah, throwing will be part of this next progression. That is critical to my job. So, yeah, I will be throwing and have been doing some throwing and we?ve got to ramp that up a little bit and answer some questions about where we are.?

The mere fact that Manning can throw a football is a positive step, although he?s not at the point where he?s practicing with the Colts, and it still sounds like a long shot that he would actually be able to throw enough to get on the field this season. But Manning was smiling as he spoke and sounded encouraged.

?It?s nice having the reins cut off you a little bit, and having a little more freedom to do weightlifting activities and on-the-field activities that you?re normally used to doing,? Manning said. ?It?s good because it means we?ve done what we?re supposed to do over the past three months.?

Still, Manning says he can?t be sure that his health will continue to progress, and he?s not sure when he?ll be healthy enough to play in an NFL game again.

?It doesn?t guarantee anything in this next phase, but it does allow you to step into that phase,? Manning said. ?The worst news we could have heard yesterday was ?You?re not where you want to be and you?ve got to keep doing what you?re doing.? He has given us clearance for the next phase, and I?ll follow that as well as I can.?

And he can only hope that he continues to improve to the point where he throws as well as ever next year, with the Colts or some other team.
