Talk. Eat. Drink. Portland.: Paddy's Bar and Grill

Paddy's Bar and Grill

Happy Hour 4-6:30 p.m. and 10-close
?www.paddys.com

I have been to Paddy's more than once, usually with my family members. (Fun fact: one of my sisters had her 21st birthday here and threw up at the table!) I had never been here for Happy Hour, though, so when my brother suggested it for dinner I decided to go a little early to try it out.

We were able to sit outside, which was nice, but there was a strange fishy smell nearby.? For Happy Hour they offer a variety of flavors of mac and cheese, all for $6, and other $5 food specials.? I wish we had been a bit more adventurous with our food selections to be honest.? My fiance ordered BBQ pork sliders and I ordered nachos.? After ordering, I noticed that someone at the table behind me got the Irish corn dogs, which the server said was their bangers and mash made into a corn dog and served with french fries.? Why didn't I try that?! My nachos were very big and were made with, I think, house made corn chips.? The chips really made these nachos.? Watch out, though, they come with red onions (even though there is no mention of onions on the menu).? These nachos are not for people who are sensitive to spice--with lots of chunks of jalapenos, my mouth was on fire.? I still managed to eat the majority of them.? The BBQ sliders came with two, so they weren't as great of a value as the nachos were.? I was full and wasn't able to order anything for dinner when my brother and sister-in-law arrived, but my fiance still had to order more food.
?For dinner everyone else got sandwiches that came with fries.? No one complained, but no one raved either.? The food looked pretty good, but I only tried a few french fries.
Although they don't offer Happy Hour specials for drinks, the drinks still were the best part of my meal.? If you remember, one of my favorite things in life is a drink with more drink on the side.? At Paddy's they have more than one drink like this.? The lemon drop is served with an additional side of drink with a strainer, and so is the kamikaze (not the shot, the drink).? I love having a full drink and then being able to give myself a refill.? I recommend the kamikaze over the lemon drop, because they put orange juice in the lemon drop here.? I tend to avoid drinks made with orange juice other than mimosas. The kamikaze was perfectly made and great for people who like lime and vodka. Considering the fact that these drinks both came with extra drink, they were a great value (I think they were $8.50 each). Service was great the whole time. For some reason we had two servers, and they both kept up on drinks and food. They even split the bill four ways without us asking, which made it easy to divide up the cost--sometimes awkward in a group. ?

IS HELLO! SAFE AND SOUND?

emission from mobile phones

Misconceptions and undue fears rule when it comes to emission from mobile phones and other telecoms equipment /infrastructure. The recent and the very first West Africa Conference on Electromagnetic Fields (EMF) Exposure and Health organised by NCC doused reasoning in this direction writes KEHINDE OLESIN

?

The Executive vice chairman, Nigerian Communications Commission, Dr Eugene Juwah did not mince his words when he said the growth of Telecommunications sector in Nigeria has been phenomenal in the last 10 years. He said that following the liberalization of the sector, the country has witnessed tremendous transformation leading to the achievement of over 70 percent tele-density as at the first quarter of 2012.

But again more so, we enjoy the facilities that the telecoms give, we face some challenges that are occasioned by the presence of the telecoms facilities.

The hazards and the steady increase in public concerns pertaining to the possible effects of Electromagnetic (EMF) radiations emanating from telecoms equipment/infrastructure of human health were the crux of experts? discussions ??at the recent First West Africa Conference on Electromagnetic Fields (EMF) Exposure and Health. The theme of the conference; Harmonizing EMF Policy, Exposure Limits and Risk Communication in West Africa naturally pitched professionals towards the solution.

In 2009, the Nigerian Communications Commission published its Guideline on the technical Specifications for the Installation of Masts and Towers which operators must adhere to. This is to protect the interest of the general public and safety of personnel working in the industry as far as safety is concerned.

Non-compliance with the mandatory provisions of these guidelines shall be deemed to be an offence punishable under relevant provisions of the Nigerian Communications Acts 2003 the Nigerian Communications (Enforcement Processes,) Regulations 2005 and other applicable laws.

At the conference, the Honourable Minister of Communication Technology, Mrs Omobola Johnson, submitted that while we savour the gains recorded in the? telecoms industry in the sub-region in the last decade,? mindful of the fact that mobile telephony plays a leading role in the positive revolution, we should be mindful of our health.

Her words-?Recognising the enormous concerns, which have been expressed both locally and international, on whether exposure to electromagnetic fields poses any health hazards to human; and determined to ensure that the people of West Africa are well advised??

According to her there is more than 3 billion mobile phone subscribers in the world served by over 5million base stations connected by mobile infrastructure. She reiterated the concern whether mobile phones are harmful or not.

She explained that mobile phones are low powered radiofrequency transmitters operating at frequencies between 450 and 2700 MHz with peak powers in the range of 0.1 to 2 watts. The handset only transmits power when it is turned on. In this case, the radiofrequency exposure to a user falls off rapidly with increasing distance from the handset. A person using a mobile phone 30-40ccm away from her body will therefore have a much lower exposure to radiofrequency fields than someone who has the handset against the ear. Using the phone in areas of good reception, she said invariably decreases exposure as it allows the phone to transmit at reduced power.

The Honourable Minister of Health, Professor Onyebuchi Chukwu said the EMF are? an unavoidable part of the environment we live in but the magnetic field component of EMF which is able to penetrate the body is the component that is studied in relation to health, particularly in the area of cancer disease.

Despite the mixed reports, Professor Chukwu believed that there might be an inherent increased risk of cancer in children who spend long periods on their cell phones held close to their heads, because their brains are still developing and are still vulnerable to environmental factors that could cause DNA damage. The smaller size of their head makes them susceptible to greater proportional exposure to radiofrequency energy. These combined with longer years of exposure may increase the risks.

To allay the fears of the health Minister is the innovation we have around. Technology is getting better and the newer phones are digital which emit less radiofrequency energy.

A World Health Organization Fact Sheet on Electromagnetic Fields and Public Health on Mobile Phones presented by a representative of WHO, Dr. Emilie Van Deventer bared that ?while an increased risk of brain tumors ?is not established, the increasing use of mobile phones and the lack of data for mobile phone use over time periods longer than 15 years warrant further research of mobile phone use and brain cancer risk. According to the fact sheet, WHO identifies and promotes research priorities for radiofrequency fields and health to fill gaps in knowledge through its research agendas.

The body develops public information materials and promotes dialogue among scientists, governments, industry and the public to raise the level of understanding about potential adverse health risks of mobile phones.

Another expert, Telecoms Health Safety and Environment (HSE) Risk Manager Idris Bello Eneye, said mobile telecoms operators have received multitude of complaints bordering on the concerns of possible adverse health impacts of living around the BTS and the use of handsets. More of the complaints are from people living within 100m radius of the BTS.

WAY FORWARD, WAY OUT

Eneye said there could be a way forward when some of the challenges relating to regulations and standards are resolved by harmonizing the regulations and clearer delineation of authorities and responsibilities.

He also proffered that NCC and all such other regional bodies should engage in researches in line with WHO guidelines and periodically measure, monitor and verify the public and occupational exposures to EMF to assure compliance with necessary bodies.

Awareness, public enlightenment and use of alternative power source could also help reduce whatever emission.

Report: Chinese PLA Access 80% of ?World's Communications ...

China has found a backdoor to access 80 percent of the ?world?s communications? to include information passed through the internet and sensitive infrastructure databases, writes a former senior security analyst for the Pentagon.

F. Michael Maloof, who now writes for WND, cites Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd and ZTE Corporation as the companies the Chinese government and People Liberation Army can use to gain access to this information via commercial networks installed by each Chinese electronic manufacturer.

?The two companies give the Chinese remote electronic ?backdoor? access through the equipment they have installed in telecommunications networks in 140 countries. The Chinese companies service 45 of the world?s 50 largest telecom operators,? Maloof writes.

He goes further to say the Chinese are working to access the remaining 20 percent. Individuals and companies who communicate over their ?virtual private networks? or VPNs are especially susceptible. Sources have told Maloof those networks are leaking like a ?sieve? to Chinese data collectors, especially those that connect to companies based in places like Mexico.

U.S. government officials are aware of this threat. The U.S. House Intelligence Committee has also chosen to investigate the two companies in question.?U.S. Commerce Department leaders banned?Huawei from helping build a national wireless network as Maloof also points out.

It?s easy to connect this to the further cyber threat posed by the Chinese. It also brings to mind the 1,800 cases of counterfeit Chinese parts found in U.S. military equipment to include missile defense systems and intelligence sensors. On the drum beats for more cyber awareness inside the Pentagon.

If you want to hear more from Maloof on the subject he did an interview on The Cyber Jungle about the topic. Fast forward to the last segment when Maloof?s interview picks up.
