Partially assembled iPad 5 and iPhone 5C leaked on video

[unable to retrieve full-text content]

Source: pocketnow.com --- Monday, August 05, 2013
We?ve been flocked with rumors of an IPad 5 and an iPhone 5C in photos recently, and even though we?re mostly sold with the idea of the IPad 5, since it?s only natural that Apple retains the same design elements of the IPad mini in their future generation tablet, it?s hard to grasp the concept of the iPhone 5C, and specially when the housing of the phone looks like a gigantic iPhone 5 case. Still, we continue to see leaks on these products, and this time we find them both on video, which just makes the claims a bit more credible. These videos don?t vary in ... Continue reading ? Fast android emulator using Virtualbox

When developing Android applications, you have to keep in mind all the different Android OS versions and various screen sizes and resolutions. The main objective before releasing an application is to find bugs and design imperfections.

Default Android emulator

The great thing about using an emulator for development is that it gives you an opportunity to develop applications without having a real Android device. The default Android emulator comes together with the Android SDK and can be found in the "tools" folder.

So far so good, we have our cake, but can we eat it? The answer comes about 5 minutes after we hit the "Launch" button. Go grab a coffee. Have breakfast. Come back. Wait another 5 minutes. Maybe even more.

Finally - the emulator launches, only to show how slow it actually is.

Boot animation

All these performance problems stem from the fact that it emulates an ARM processor so it can run the actual code of your application. It accomplishes that by providing dynamic binary translation of the device machine code to the OS and processor architecture of your development machine.

Basically, it does a lot of mumbo-jumbo to pretend it's an ARM processor - when actually it isn't.

OK, it's slow. So what can we do about it?

  • Well, first, we can help our CPU out by delegating the rendering process to the GPU by checking "Use Host GPU" checkbox in AVD's edit window. The screen should now look better and be more responsive. That's because the CPU is not dealing with the tedious work of doing rendering anymore. But, that's still not fast enough.

Host GPU

  • We can download Intel Atom (x86) images and, while we're at it, download Intel x86 Emulator Accelerator (HAXM, for Mac and Windows only). This will enable virtual machine acceleration capabilities of the Intel CPU (for more information check this link).

Now we're getting somewhere, once this baby starts up, it should run fast and smooth.

x86 and HAXM

You could say that this level of speed should be sufficient. That may be true, but an issue with the Intel x86 images is that you don't get Google Apps, they only come with ARM images. This is important if you're testing an app that uses GMaps, or Google Play Services.

So, as we've seen, ARM images aren't fast enough even with hardware acceleration. And emulators don't have the Play Store. What now?

Genymotion by Genymobile

Genymotion is a new, fast Android emulator developed by the French company Genymobile. It's based on the open-source project AndroVM, and the first beta version was released back in June.

It runs on all major platforms (Mac, Windows, Linux). For now it's freely available, but there is also going to be a paid version.

According to AndroVM blog, the free version will be feature-rich, and the paid version will be intended for large companies needing a higher level of collaboration on Genymotion.

How to use it?

Genymotion relies on Oracle VirtualBox to work (version 4.1 or above). So...

  1. Download and install VirtualBox. For Windows users it's not necessary to install VirtualBox separately, because it is available from the Genymotion site, bundled with the Genymotion emulator.

  2. Go to Genymotion website and sign up. You'll receive a validation mail, so just click on the validation link to proceed.

  3. Download and install the Genymotion emulator (the current version is 1.1.0).

  4. Start Genymotion. You might need to configure path to your Android SDK location in Genymotion settings (probably if you've installed SDK in a non default location). Since this is a first start, there are no devices. Click on "Add" and download new device. To see available devices, write your credentials in the pop-up dialog and click "Connect".

  5. Select the device and click "Start".

It starts quickly and is insanely fast! It's a little awkward to start the emulator separately, but Genymotion provides Eclipse and Android Studio integration through plugins, also available on Genymotion website. To use the plugin, you have to provide a path to Genymotion installation and Android SDK, as well.

Eclipse plugin

OK, it's fast. Is that it?

Well, for me, the sheer speed of Genymotion is what got me using it in the first place. Which is kind of funny, because in the first version you couldn't even rotate the device.

But, alongside the speed bump, it also provides GPS, compass and battery control via some good-looking widgets.

Battery

Battery control widget

GPS

The GPS widget even provides GMaps for selecting mock locations, which is really nice for testing location based apps.

Device angle control and Play Store

Through the Genymotion shell it's also possible to control the device's angle (accelerometer), but it would be cool to control it using a widget, something like the Windows phone emulator does.

Accelerometer

Genymotion devices with Google Apps also come with the Play Store preinstalled. This comes in handy if you want to test an app from the Play Store quickly.

Multiple screen sizes

Multiple screen sizes are one of Android developer's worst nightmares. There is a huge number of different screen configurations of Android devices.

Android multiple screen sizes

Genymotion, as well as the default emulator, offers custom configuration of device's screen. In the list of available devices, select the device for which you want to change screen configuration and click on the monitor icon on the right side. Then simply select one of the predefined screen resolutions or create your own.

Screen configuration

Final result

Be careful when choosing resolution, because you may end up with something rather strange?

Where it comes short

The main setback of Genymotion is that it only provides devices with API version 16, 17 and a preview version of Android 4.3 (API 18). If we take a look at Google Dashboard, we'll see that Gingerbread still holds about 33% of all devices (API 10).

So, for testing on that platform you still need either a default emulator or real device, which kind of defeats the purpose of Genymotion as a testing platform.

And there is no camera, which I don't miss, but could be really useful.

In the future, we can expect even more features, like taking screenshots or video screen capturing (which would be great for making demonstration videos). An accelerometer widget would be cool, and even a camera would be nice, but we can only wait and see.

Final thoughts

Well, you can never really get rid of real devices, because you'll always want to test an app on a real device before releasing it. But during development I recommend using a Genymotion emulator. Even though it doesn't cover all major Android OS versions. It's fast, stable, the GPS sensor manipulation is awesome and with the device rotation feature added to the 1.1.0 version - it's truly the way to go.

Also, deploying apps is almost instant and that can save you a lot of time when you're doing small changes to the app. But you have to watch out since the Genymotion emulator runs faster than real devices themselves, giving you a false impression of the performance of the app.

Always test on a real device!

EasyGroup to launch budget supermarket in Britain

(Reuters) - EasyGroup Chairman Stelios Haji-Ioannou said on Sunday he planned to open a low-cost food retail business in Britain, easyFoodstore, aimed at undercutting prices at German discount grocers Aldi and Lidl.

The founder of budget carrier easyJet said the project was a "low risk experiment" to be run out of a pilot store in south London.

"There is a gap in the food retail market - a niche below some of the current budget operators such as Aldi and Lidl," he said in a statement.

Set to offer basic, no-brand-name, packet and tinned foods at lower prices, easyFoodstore could be rolled out on a wider basis from 2014 onwards, Stelios said.

EasyGroup, Stelios' private investment vehicle, operates its "easy" brand in several sectors including travel, leisure and hospitality.

Listed by Forbes as the third most wealthy Cypriot billionaire, Stelios is easyJet's largest single shareholder despite being at odds with the airline since he quit its board in 2010.

New US penalties will greet Iran's new leader

WASHINGTON (AP) ? As Iran's new president takes over, new U.S. penalties against the country appear a done deal.

In a letter to President Barack Obama, 76 senators are demanding tougher punishment on Iran's economy until the Islamic republic scales back its nuclear program. It also urges Obama to consider military options while keeping the door open to diplomacy.

The Senate letter, a copy of which was obtained Saturday by The Associated Press, comes just days after the House overwhelmingly passed new restrictions on Iran's oil sector and its mining and construction industries. Senators are expected to take up the same package in September.

"Until we see a significant slowdown of Iran's nuclear activities, we believe our nation must toughen sanctions and reinforce the credibility of our option to use military force at the same time as we fully explore a diplomatic solution to our dispute with Iran," says the letter, which will be delivered Monday.

The Obama administration is concerned Congress' effort could undercut Iran's relatively moderate President-elect Hasan Rouhani, who was formally endorsed by Iran's ayatollah on Saturday and takes the oath of office Sunday. Rouhani has pledged to follow a "path of moderation" and promised greater openness over Iran's nuclear program.

Obama wants to give Rouhani a chance to prove his seriousness.

The U.S. believes Iran has been working for years to develop nuclear weapons. Iran insists its program is for peaceful energy and research purposes.

Rouhani's victory signaled Iran's clear dissatisfaction, the senators said. But they noted that all final decisions on nuclear matters rest with Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and said Iran must not be allowed to use any new nuclear negotiations with world powers to stall for time.

"Iran today continues its large-scale installation of advanced centrifuges," their letter said. "This will soon put it in the position to be able to rapidly produce weapons-grade uranium, bringing Tehran to the brink of a nuclear weapons capability."

"We need to understand quickly whether Tehran is at last ready to negotiate seriously," it added. "Iran needs to understand that the time for diplomacy is nearing its end."

Obama prefers diplomacy. He has given Iran until sometime next spring to prove to the world that its program is peaceful.

If Iran fails to do so, the stage may be set for military intervention from the U.S. or Israel, which sees Iranian nuclear weapons capacity as an existential threat and has warned of taking action according to its own timeline.

Travel Tips: How To Take Your Dog, Cat, Pet To The Vet Easy ...

(PET CARE) Do you struggle with taking your pet to the vet? Want to you make your next visit stress-free? Read on for seven tips on how to make a trip to the vet easier for both you and your pet. ? Global Animal

Paw Nation

Want to make your pet?s trip to the veterinarian easier on you, your pet and the entire staff of the veterinary hospital? My advice for you is simple: Relax.

Though there are a lot of other things you can do, I find that a change of attitude can have the most dramatic effect. If that surprises you, it shouldn?t. Our pets are incredibly attuned to our moods, and if you?re acting as if a veterinary visit is a bad thing, your dog or cat is more likely to feel that way, too. A cheerful, optimistic outlook is contagious, not only by animals but also by the folks at the veterinary hospital. Of all the things that can be spread at a medical facility, a positive outlook is the one I hope goes viral. It just makes things so much easier for everyone.

Adopting a more relaxed attitude may be the easiest thing you can do, but it?s not the only strategy to help get your pet through a veterinary visit with minimal anxiety. Here are more techniques.

Car Tripping
For many pets, especially cats, car trips seem to end poorly (in the pet?s opinion). If the only time you got in a car you were going to get a shot or have a stranger poke a thermometer somewhere you?d rather he didn?t, you?d have a bad attitude about travel, too. Mix it up. Take your pet for rides he?ll enjoy. For dogs, head for a place to hike or to a store where pets are welcome. Though your cat likely won?t enjoy visiting, just getting out for a ride with treats and praise can help make him less nervous about future journeys.

Carrier Comfort
Like the car, for many animals a carrier means a trip to the veterinarian because that?s the only time they?re in one. That?s why many pets make themselves scarce the moment the carrier comes up from the basement or down from the garage rafters. Change the script: Make the carrier part of the household furnishings. Though you may not want it as part of your formal living room, make space for it in an area your pet sees daily, such as the laundry room. Pets who are familiar with their carriers are more comfortable in them when it comes time to get on the road.

Good Scents
Synthetic pheromones mimic scents animals create to calm themselves and others. They?re available for both dogs and cats, and in many cases they can help calm an anxious pet. Spritz some on the cushion or towel inside the carrier, and spray even more on a towel to put over the carrier. This will turn the carrier into the cat equivalent of a cozy den with the smell of cookies coming from the kitchen.

Hungry Is Better
And speaking of cookies, take treats but make sure your pet is hungry enough to want them. It won?t kill your pet to skip the meal before a veterinary visit, but it will make the treats you?ll have at the hospital seem even more delicious. Bring on the really yummy, juicy, meaty treats, such as baby-food meat sticks, deli turkey or bonita flakes for cats.

Crowd Sourcing
My longtime friend and fellow Vetstreet pet expert Arden Moore gave me this tip, and I love it! If you have more than one pet, take them all in when you visit the vet. Let them all get treats and praise. It will teach them that the vet?s office is a fun place to be. Only one gets the ?real? veterinary visit, but they all get a good experience. Or if you?re a single-pet person, arrange to take your pet into the vet?s office for a visit and treats when there?s nothing wrong. The results will be the same.

Chemical Crutches
Some pets really need a little more help than a loving owner can provide. If your pet is one of these, ask your veterinarian to prescribe a mild antianxiety medication for your next visit.

Obviously, you?ll need to work out the details with your veterinarian before you put some of these strategies into place, but I doubt you?ll have any problem doing so. We veterinarians love animals, and we don?t like seeing them scared of us. Anything that can change a scaredy cat into a happy pet is something we can get behind ? so much so that you shouldn?t be at all surprised to see your veterinarian also working to make visits more pleasant for all.

Iran's new president takes oath of office

TEHRAN, Iran --?

Hasan Rouhani has taken his oath of office, the final step in his inauguration as Iran's new president.

Rouhani, who replaces Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, was sworn in during an open session of parliament on Sunday. State TV broadcast the ceremony live.

Iran's media and officials have treated Rouhani as president since Saturday, when he was endorsed by the country's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Leaders and other representatives from more than 50 countries, mostly from the region, attended the ceremony.

It was the first time since Iran's 1979 Islamic Revolution that foreign dignitaries attended the swearing-in ceremony of an Iranian president, underscoring Rouhani's stated commitment to improving the country's foreign ties.

Rouhani won a landslide victory in June 14 presidential elections.

Casta?eda: Adult Basic Education crucial to Texas' economic success

SAN ANTONIO, August 1 - The Texas Border Coalition has reiterated its strong support for the move of Adult Basic Education from the Texas Education Agency to the Texas Workforce Commission.

Legislation to make the switch was authored by state Sen. Joan Huffman of Houston and sponsored by state Rep. Ryan Guillen of Rio Grande City during this year?s regular legislative session. The legislation, Senate Bill 307, passed and Gov. Rick Perry is set to ceremonially sign it into law in South Texas in the coming weeks.

The legislation carries out a key recommendation made by the Sunset Commission during the interim that ABE be moved from TEA to TWC. The legislation requires TWC to provide adequate staffing, including the hiring of a director, to ?develop, administer, and support a comprehensive statewide adult education program and coordinate related federal and state programs for the education and training of adults.?

The Texas Border Coalition represents cities, counties and economic development groups from Brownsville to El Paso. It has made Adult Basic Education one of its top legislative priorities for many years. On Wednesday, Blas Casta?eda, chair of the TBC?s workforce development committee, testified in favor of ABE?s move to TWC at a TWC Stakeholder's meeting in San Antonio. The meeting was held in conjunction with the Tex-BEST Summit being held at the Grand Hyatt hotel.

Casta?eda is a former external affairs/economic development officer at Laredo Community College. He now consults on workforce training and economic development. He has chaired the TBC's workforce development committee for many years.

?We worked intensively to get this major change during the regular session since we need this type of delivery process for our higher education institutions to deliver critical and wide open access to the folks that are looking to us for such services. They want to get back into the workforce,? Casta?eda said.

?Business and industry is in dire need of a trained workforce and having this process within the workforce system facilitates a major opportunity for both participants and the industry employers in Texas.?

Casta?eda said TBC must work hand in hand with border communities and the industries that provide the economic impacts for all of our cities and counties in Texas. ?The result is the creation of competitive business developments and the state with the highest job creation in the country. Our Texas is on roll,? Casta?eda said.

Here, in full, is the letter Casta?eda delivered to the TWC Stakeholder meeting in San Antonio:

I am proud to testify today on behalf of the Texas Border Coalition (TBC) in support of transferring the Adult Basic Education (ABE) program from the Texas Education Agency to the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC).

The Texas Border Coalition (TBC) is a collective voice of border mayors, county judges, economic development commissions focused on issues that affect more than 2.5 million people along the Texas-Mexico border region and economically disadvantaged counties from El Paso to Brownsville.

As Chair of TBC?s Workforce Development Committee, and during my 37 years at Laredo Community College, I have had the opportunity to work closely with state and local organizations that are dedicated to providing adults with the basic reading, writing and math skills they need to participate in our state?s 21st Century economy and provide for their families. The adult education program is absolutely crucial to decreasing unemployment, increasing literacy and putting Texas on a path to continued economic success in the 21st Century.

TBC strongly supports this move, and believes that ABE aligns well with TWC?s mission to develop our state?s workforce. TBC believes that TWC will provide good direction to make the ABE program even more impactful for Texans who need basic skills to enter the workforce and contribute to our state?s economy. TBC is excited to work with the Workforce Commission members and staff to make the ABE transition smooth and effective.

TBC strongly supported SB 307 by Senator Huffman and Rep. Guillen, which mandates this move. In 2012, TBC testified in support of the Sunset Advisory Commission recommendation to transfer the adult education programs from the TEA (Texas Education Agency) to the Workforce Commission and create an Adult Education and Literacy Advisory Committee.

TBC supported this move with the understanding that the current funding and resources for the program stay intact and are allocated to the areas of greatest need. In particular, TBC would like to draw the Commission?s attention to several points that TBC believes are crucial for ABE?s success in its new home at the Workforce Commission:

? All funds under the current ABE program should be transferred as well for program activities at TWC;

? A state ABE program director should be created and assigned at the TWC to administer, manage and oversee all daily activities of the ABE program. The Skills Development Fund (SDF) at TWC provides an excellent model for this program;

? TWC must maintain transparent decision-making in the allocation of ABE funding;

? All ABE funding should be allocated by county, so that all communities have a fair and equitable opportunity to access funding. Again, the SDF provides a well-functioning model;

? All ABE funds should be allocated in accordance with US Department of Education?s formula, which is based on the latest U.S. Census count of the individuals by county who are 16 and older, not enrolled in school and lack a high school diploma or GED; and

? TBC looks forward to working with TWC and other stakeholders to develop ABE plans with involvement from local employers, workforce boards, community colleges and other stakeholders to maximize industry involvement and participation.

On behalf of the members of the Texas Border Coalition, I offer our support to TWC as it takes over the ABE program. We have enjoyed working with the Workforce Commission members and staff on other issues that affect the workforce in the border region, and we look forward to working with the Commission and staff to carry forward the great work of the Adult Basic Education program as it moves to TWC.

Thank you for considering our views on this important subject. I am happy to answer questions or assist the Commission members and staff in any way possible.

Sincerely,

Blas Casta?eda

Chair, TBC Workforce Development Committee

Feds, states want Apple to revamp e-book practices

(AP) ? The Justice Department and 33 state attorneys general on Friday said they want to force Apple to sign contracts with publishers that don't prevent Apple or other e-book stores from competing on price.

A federal judge ruled last month that Apple Inc. colluded with publishers to raise e-book prices. The Cupertino, Calif., company has denied wrongdoing and has said it will appeal the decision.

The Justice Department and the attorneys general told the court Friday that they want Apple to tear up its contracts with five e-book publishers and sign new ones that aren't likely to increase prices. In addition, they want Apple to allow rival e-book sellers like Amazon.com Inc. and Barnes & Noble Inc. to provide links inside their iPhone and iPad apps to their own book stores.

Apple allows Amazon and Barnes & Noble's apps to load books that have already been purchased, but doesn't allow the apps to sell books or link to online bookstores.

Apple did not immediately respond to a message seeking comment.

The book publishers previously settled the price-fixing charges. They are Hachette, HarperCollins, Simon & Schuster, Holtzbrinck Publishers, doing business as Macmillan, and The Penguin Publishing Co. Ltd., doing business as Penguin Group. The settlements were designed to encourage price competition and discounting, but that hasn't happened.

The government alleged that the publishers colluded with Apple to move the e-book industry away from the wholesale model employed by Amazon, which had unnerved publishers by selling e-book versions of popular hardcover titles for $9.99 before the April 2010 release of Apple's iPad. Under its contracts with publishers, Amazon was free to sell books at any price it wanted. Apple instead adopted the "agency" model, under which publishers set the retail price and the store takes a cut. Under that model, the store can't discount a book.

In her ruling, the judge said the conspiracy harmed consumers in numerous ways. Some had to pay more for e-books, she said. Others bought a cheaper e-book rather than the one they preferred to purchase and others deferred a purchase altogether rather than pay the higher price.

The settlements with the publishers removed the shackles that prevented Amazon from discounting, but the $9.99 price for e-books that publishers dreaded has become increasingly rare.

Will Marathon Oil (MRO) Beat Earnings?

We expect Houston, Texas based energy exploration and production firm Marathon Oil Corp. (MRO) to beat expectations when it reports second-quarter 2013 results after the market closes on Aug 6, 2013. ?

Why a Likely Positive Surprise?

Our proven model shows that Marathon Oil is likely to beat earnings because it has the right combination of two key factors.??

Positive Zacks ESP:Expected Surprise Prediction or ESP (Read: Zacks Earnings ESP: A Better Method), which represents the difference between the Most Accurate estimate of 72 cents and the Zacks Consensus Estimate of 71 cents, stands at +1.41%. This is a meaningful and leading indicator of a likely positive earnings surprise for shares.?

Zacks Rank #3 (Hold):The stocks with a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy), Zacks Rank #2 (Buy) and Zacks Rank #3 (Hold) have a significantly higher chance of beating earnings. The Sell-rated stocks (#4 and #5) should never be considered while going into an earnings announcement.

The combination of Marathon Oil?s Zacks Rank #3 (Hold) and +1.41% ESP makes us confident of a positive earnings beat. ?

What is Driving the Better-Than-Expected Earnings?

Marathon Oil has a strong inventory of development projects that provides visible production growth over the coming years.? The Eagle Ford and Bakken shale plays are expected to offer Marathon a meaningful growth opportunity and management?s guidance of 7?10% annual production growth for 2013 seems to be on the conservative side.

New contracts and facility designs are expected to increase the company?s pipeline transport capacity, thus increasing reliability and reducing costs.

Marathon Oil?s divestiture program to do away with assets that do not fit in its long-term growth plan is intact. Recently, the company announced that it has entered into an agreement to sell its 10% working interest in Block 31, offshore Angola. Should the deal go through, it will help the company to close approximately $2.9 billion in divestitures, almost reaching the upper end of its target of $1.5?$3 billion through the period of 2011 to 2013.?

The company?s intention of sharing profits with its investors is also seen as a positive. Last month, Marathon Oil announced a 12% hike in its quarterly dividend, bringing the dividend amount to 19 cents per share.

Other Stocks to Consider

Here are some other energy firms that are worth considering as these also have the right combination to post an earnings beat this quarter:

Natural Gas Services Group Inc. (NGS) has an earnings ESP of +3.57% and a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy).

Ferrellgas Partners LP (FGP) has an earnings ESP of +6.90% and a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy).

Oasis Petroleum Inc. (OAS) has an earnings ESP of +3.33% and a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold).

London: Twitter apologises but campaigner says wants more action

The British arm of Twitter apologised on Saturday to a group of high-profile women who have been threatened with death and rape on the micro-blogging site, and announced measures to make it easier for users to report abusive tweets.

Twitter had come under increasing pressure to react after a feminist campaigner, several women members of parliament and female journalists were targeted by users who hurled misogynistic abuse at them and in some cases made violent threats.

"I personally apologise to the women who have experienced abuse on Twitter and for what they have gone through," Tony Wang, general manager of Twitter UK, said on his own Twitter feed.

"The abuse they've received is simply not acceptable. It's not acceptable in the real world, and it's not acceptable on Twitter," he said.

Twitter UK said it was adding staff to help handle abuse reports. It also said an in-tweet "report abuse" button currently available on the Twitter app for iPhones would be added to the Twitter website and to platforms used on other mobile devices.

The problem of abuse by so-called internet "trolls" has been front-page news in Britain since activist Caroline Criado-Perez was hit by a barrage of vitriolic tweets after successfully campaigning for a woman's face to appear on bank notes.

In recognition of her role, Criado-Perez appeared alongside Bank of England Governor Mark Carney on July 24, when he announced 19th century novelist Jane Austen would become the face of the new 10-pound note.

Police arrested two men over rape threats against Criado-Perez. One of them was also suspected of making rape threats against opposition Labour legislator Stella Creasy, who backed the bank note campaign and also appeared with Carney on July 24.

In separate incidents days later, several high-profile female journalists received tweets from someone threatening to bomb their homes and "destroy everything" there.

New Mexico exhibit highlights rare photos of Beatles taken during first US concert in 1964

TAOS, N.M. - Snow and frigid temperatures didn't stop thousands of screaming teenagers from crowding into the Washington Coliseum in the nation's capital for the Beatles first live concert on American soil.

And not having a flash didn't stop photographer Mike Mitchell, then just 18 years old, from using his unrestricted access to document that historic February night in 1964 using only the dim light in the arena.

Ghostly shadows and streams of light filled some negatives. With the help of modern technology and close to 1,000 hours in front of the computer screen, Mitchell was able to peel back decades of grunge and transform those old negatives into a rare, artful look at one of pop culture's defining moments.

Mitchell's portraits of the Beatles are the centerpiece of a monthlong exhibition at the David Anthony Fine Art gallery in Taos ? the first time the prints have been exhibited since being unveiled in 2011 at a Christie's auction in New York City. The gallery started hanging the first of the framed prints a week ago in preparation for Friday's opening.

"Just amazing," gallery owner David Mapes said as he looked around the room at the large black and white prints and wondered aloud what it must have been like to be in Mitchell's shoes that night.

Mapes pointed to a photograph of the four band members, their backs to the camera with a thin ribbon of light outlining their silhouettes. When he first saw it, he said he teared up. He knew he had to find a way to share it with others.

"It brought back memories of that time. I was a teenager and it was so much about love and everything was optimistic feeling," he said.

It didn't take long from the time the Beatles released their debut album in 1963 to go from a little British bar band to an international sensation. The Beatles' reach eventually stretched beyond music and haircuts to religion and politics.

"The Beatles came to represent some of the yearnings for peace and hope and equality and a larger social justice. In the United States and throughout the world, their personalities became as important as the music," said Norman Markowitz, a history professor at Rutgers University.

For Paul Vance, who teaches a class on the Beatles at Winona State University in Minnesota, the band was the reason he pursued music. He was 11 years old when the Beatles first came to the U.S.

The Beatles had good timing, he said, having arrived at a time when America was still heartbroken over the assassination of then-President John F. Kennedy and young people were looking for meaning in their lives.

"Much has been said and written about it," Vance said of the Beatles' influence. "It's a very significant point that the world after the Beatles was a radically different place than the world before the Beatles, and they did influence and change so many aspects of not just American life, but life everywhere."

Mitchell can't predict what role his photographs will play as historians and music fans continue to examine the evolution of American pop culture. Still, those moments captured by his camera that February night tell a grainy story of four young men who seemed to be having the time of their lives.

Mitchell remembers how hot it was inside the coliseum. The crowd was deafening but the resonating bass beats were unmistakable. He said the Beatles were "on fire" that night.

"They were really juiced. It was obvious at the time that they were really, really, really into it and I think the pictures really benefit from that," he said.

Mitchell said his goal was simple. He wanted to make great portraits of the Beatles while discovering a little more about who they really were.

With no flash, he was forced to wait for the perfect time to snap that shutter. His photographs immortalized the important details of the moment in a bath of light while the rest faded into darkness. It was the concert that marked the beginning of his fascination with light.

"I think that was the first time in my life that I had to really look more deeply at light and take my queues from what the light was doing," he said. "I learned to sort of feel from the light."

Actors with fake guns bring police with real ones

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? College filmmakers were using fake guns to shoot a robbery scene at a suburban Los Angeles coffee shop when the movie took a scary twist that wasn't in the script.

Eight police officers were descending on the masked actors. The police were real, with very real guns drawn, and had no idea this was a movie.

"Drop the gun! Drop it! Drop it!" one officer yells on an audio recording police were carrying.

One of the actors immediately let go of his fake assault rifle. But another held onto his replica handgun, forcing officers to make a life-or-death choice. An officer knocked the gun from the actor's hand and handcuffed him, drawing a peaceful climax to what could have been something far worse.

"One of the officers made the decision that had the man moved, he would have been killed," said Glendora police Capt. Tim Staab. "It was just milliseconds from a tragedy."

Police said it showed the dangers of movie-making for amateur film crews who don't get permits and follow proper steps before taking to the streets.

"I can't think of a situation more dangerous than having a gun in your hand with cops responding," Staab said. "It was much closer than we ever want to get close to."

Attempts to reach the film's director were unsuccessful. The students declined to tell police what college they were from.

The officers responded to the shop after receiving a 911 call from a woman who reported seeing an armed, masked gunman inside Classic Coffee in Glendora, a suburb east of Los Angeles that rarely sees Hollywood film crews.

Police said there was nothing to indicate a short movie was being shot. No one was outside to warn customers, there were no signs, and no permit had been pulled.

When officers arrived, there was no question in their mind that a robbery was occurring, Staab said.

It's rare "to go into a coffee shop and see someone carrying an AR-15 rifle and wearing a mask," he said.

Under normal filming protocols, weapons carried by the actors have orange markings to indicate they are replicas. But the markings on the guns used by the students had been covered by a black pen, presumably to make the weapons look more realistic.

Staab said one of the masked men, apparently startled by the real-life response, held the fake gun by his side, pointed toward the ground. When he didn't drop it, Staab said, an officer did something unusual ? he stripped it from the man's hand and sent the gun falling to the floor.

After the man was handcuffed, the officer is heard on the audiotape asking what was going on. Somebody says a film was being made.

"You are shooting a short film?" the officer asks. "In a store with a man with a gun?"

The students were allowed to keep the fake weapons and weren't facing any charges. They were given a lecture by officers about the dangers they created and went on their way.

Climber buried by avalanche on Mount Hood

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) ? A snowboarder traveling through an ice tunnel with six other people was buried when the tunnel collapsed and an avalanche struck while they traversed a glacier on Mount Hood on Saturday afternoon, officials said.

The six other members of his party escaped without injury. The man has not yet been identified.

Hood River Sheriff's Office Sgt. Pete Hughes said the other climbers called in the incident at about 4 p.m.

"It trapped one person in the tunnel, (but) we're not sure if he was the last one out or it just caught him," Hughes said. "It sounds like there's a significant amount of ice and snow that fell."

An airplane was dispatched to survey the area, along with crews from local sheriff's offices.

Hughes said it will "take some doing" to reach the area where the climber was buried on the White River Glacier, which begins about 6,000 feet up the south side of the mountain.

Hughes says it's unclear at what elevation the avalanche buried the climber.

Search and rescue crews were assessing whether it was safe late Saturday afternoon to get to the snowboarder's elevation and try to rescue him before dark.

Scientists to cook world's first in-vitro beef burger

LONDON | Fri Aug 2, 2013 9:06pm EDT

LONDON (Reuters) - A corner of west London will see culinary and scientific history made on Monday when scientists cook and serve up the world's first lab-grown beef burger.

The in-vitro burger, cultured from cattle stem cells, the first example of what its creator says could provide an answer to global food shortages and help combat climate change, will be fried in a pan and tasted by two volunteers.

The burger is the result of years of research by Dutch scientist Mark Post, a vascular biologist at the University of Maastricht, who is working to show how meat grown in petri dishes might one day be a true alternative to meat from livestock.

The meat in the burger has been made by knitting together around 20,000 strands of protein that has been cultured from cattle stem cells in Post's lab.

The tissue is grown by placing the cells in a ring, like a donut, around a hub of nutrient gel, Post explained.

To prepare the burger, scientists combined the cultured beef with other ingredients normally used in burgers, such as salt, breadcrumbs and egg powder. Red beet juice and saffron have been added to bring out its natural colors.

"Our burger is made from muscle cells taken from a cow. We haven't altered them in any way," Post said in a statement on Friday. "For it to succeed it has to look, feel and hopefully taste like the real thing."

VIABLE ALTERNATIVE?

Success, in Post's view, would mean not just a tasty burger, but also the prospect of finding a sustainable, ethical and environmentally friendly alternative to meat production.

According to a 2006 report by the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), industrialized agriculture contributes on a "massive scale" to climate change, air pollution, land degradation, energy use, deforestation and biodiversity decline.

The report, entitled Livestock's Long Shadow, said the meat industry contributes about 18 percent of global greenhouse-gas emissions and this proportion is expected to grow as consumers in fast-developing countries such as China and India eat more meat.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), annual meat production is projected to rise to 376 million metric tons by 2030 from 218 million metric tons in 1997-1999, and demand from a growing world population is expected to rise beyond that.

Post cites FAO figures suggesting demand for meat is expected to increase by more than two-thirds by 2050.

Animal welfare campaigners applauded the arrival of cultured meat and predicted a great future for it.

"In vitro technology will spell the end of lorries full of cows and chickens, abattoirs and factory farming," the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) campaign group said in a statement. "It will reduce carbon emissions, conserve water and make the food supply safer."

A study published in 2011 comparing the relative environmental impacts of various types of meat, including lamb, pork, beef and cultured meat, said the lab-grown product has by far the least impact on the environment.

Hanna Tuomisto, who conducted the study at Oxford University's Wildlife Conservation Research Unit, found that growing meats in-vitro would use 35 percent to 60 percent less energy, emit 80 percent to 95 percent less greenhouse gas and use around 98 percent less land than conventionally produced animal meat.

While Monday's fry-up will be a world first and only an initial proof-of concept, the Dutch scientist reckons commercial production of cultured beef could begin within the next 20 years.

"What we are going to attempt is important because I hope it will show cultured beef has the answers to major problems that the world faces," he added.

Rise in violence 'linked to climate'

Shifts in climate are strongly linked to increases in violence around the world, a study suggests.

US scientists found that even small changes in temperature or rainfall correlated with a rise in assaults, rapes and murders, as well as group conflicts and war.

The team says with the current projected levels of climate change, the world is likely to become a more violent place.

The study is published in Science.

Marshall Burke, from the University of California, Berkeley, said: "This is a relationship we observe across time and across all major continents around the world. The relationship we find between these climate variables and conflict outcomes are often very large."

The researchers looked at 60 studies from around the world, with data spanning hundreds of years.

They report a "substantial" correlation between climate and conflict.

Their examples include an increase in domestic violence in India during recent droughts, and a spike in assaults, rapes and murders during heatwaves in the US.

The report also suggests rising temperatures correlated with larger conflicts, including ethnic clashes in Europe and civil wars in Africa.

Biological root?

Mr Burke said: "We want to be careful, you don't want to attribute any single event to climate in particular, but there are some really interesting results."

It is a major priority for future research to distinguish between what is going on in each particular situation?

End Quote Marshall Burke University of California, Berkeley

The researchers say they are now trying to understand why this causal relationship exists.

"The literature offers a couple of different hints," explained Mr Burke.

"One of the main mechanisms that seems to be at play is changes in economic conditions. We know that climate affects economic conditions around the world, particularly agrarian parts of the world.

"There is lots of evidence that changes in economic conditions affect people's decisions about whether or not to join a rebellion, for example."

But he said there could also be a physiological basis, because some studies suggest that heat causes people to be prone to aggression.

"It is a major priority for future research to distinguish between what is going on in each particular situation."

The scientists say that with the current projected levels of climate change the world is likely to become a more violent place.

They estimate that a 2C (3.6F) rise in global temperature could see personal crimes increase by about 15%, and group conflicts rise by more than 50% in some regions.

Commenting on the research, Dr Stephan Harrison from the University of Exeter said it was a "timely study".

"What they have found is entirely plausible... For example, we already know that hotter and drier weather causes an increase in urban violence. Likewise, during cooler and wetter weather people tend to stay indoors, and the threat diminishes."

However, other researchers have questioned whether climate breeds conflict.

Work published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences suggested that this environmental factor was not to blame for civil war in Africa.

Instead, Dr Halvard Buhaug, from the Peace Research Institute Oslo, Norway, concluded that the conflict was linked to other factors such as high infant mortality, proximity to international borders and high local population density.

Commenting on the latest research, he said: "I disagree with the sweeping conclusion (the authors) draw and believe that their strong statement about a general causal link between climate and conflict is unwarranted by the empirical analysis that they provide.

"I was surprised to see not a single reference to a real-world conflict that plausibly would not have occurred in the absence of observed climatic extremes. If the authors wish to claim a strong causal link, providing some form of case validation is critical."

A Fish Die-Off in High Park's Grenadier Pond Perplexes Officials ...

cityscape

Officials don't know why hundreds of fish died in High Park's Grenadier Pond earlier this week.

Dead fish in Grenadier Pond on Wednesday.

The stench was noticeable within twenty metres of the shoreline. Earlier this week, there were hundreds of dead fish in groupings of dozens along the southeast side of High Park?s Grenadier Pond, some floating, some half-eaten, others bloated with decomposition. The die-off happened days ago, but officials still aren?t sure what caused it.

?I found out about it on Monday morning,? explained Lenka Holubec, a volunteer with the High Park?s natural environment committee. ?I come down here to check on the pond, and I walk the trail usually twice a day, because of the lines that some fishermen leave behind.?

?As I walked, I noticed that after the pier there were dead fish,? she said. ?It wasn?t until I saw all these juvenile fish, of various species, in layers lying on the shoreline, being eaten by the birds around, that I became horrified by the sight.?

?I was just walking and breathing,? she explained. ?[My reaction] was delayed because at first it was a few dead fish, but then it was a lot of dead fish, and the smell was so intense that day because it was sunny and hot. It was extremely strong.?

Rick Portiss, the supervisor for environmental monitoring at the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority, also found out about the occurrence on Monday.

?It was passed on to my boss,? he said. ?He came to me saying that we should go down to Grenadier Pond because there?s been a fish kill.?

?It looks like species that use the shallow water areas are the ones affected,? Portiss said. ?We just went for a little tour to look around Monday and saw the pan fish lying along the eastern shoreline.?

Among the dead fish were the usual ?pan fish,? such as pumpkinseed fish. There were some small bass, rock bass, perch, and a juvenile pike. ?We haven?t seen a fish kill of this size in a while,? Portiss said.

20130802deadfish2

TRCA?s team used a HydroLab?a piece of portable testing equipment?to take measurements of the water?s temperature and amount of dissolved oxygen. They suspected that a lack of oxygen in the water, possibly caused by an algal bloom or water stagnation in hot weather, was the culprit. This turned out not to be the case. ?Everything seemed to be fine and we?ve ruled out anoxia,? Portiss said. ?The next step is a chemistry test by the MoE [Ontario's Ministry of the Environment] and MNR [the Ministry of Natural Resources]. We?ve handed over the investigation, because we?ve gotten as far as we can.?

?What we know at this point is that various species were killed in Grenadier pond,? explained Jolanta Kowalski, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Natural Resources. ?So we are sending water and fish samples to the University of Guelph for analysis.?

However, according to Kowalski, the analysis will take time.

?Water samples can take a couple of weeks,? she said. ?Depending on how busy the lab is. But the fish samples, I?m not sure how long it could take.?

According to Kowalski, the ministry has encountered situations similar to this before, although there are usually stand-out circumstances, like a recent storm or extreme temperatures. This time is different because of the variety of species affected. Ministry officials don?t have any specific concerns about contaminants, and haven?t said the pond water poses a risk to public health.

Even so, Kowalski recommends that locals keep their pets away from fish carcasses, ?as we would normally tell the public not to let their dogs eat dead and decaying things.?

Park patrons can breathe easy, and deeply, because the City will be taking on the cleanup project, according to the acting supervisor of High Park, Dave Chapman.

?We don?t get our feet wet,? said Chapman, referring to the water in the pond, which falls under the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority?s jurisdiction. ?But we are going out and guiding some of the long-handled pool skimmers to clean up the fish as they get close enough to the shore that we can reach them. We?re just waiting for them to come into shore, but as they come in, we will be cleaning them up.?

Not a car or bicycle, but a blend _ an ELF vehicle

RESTON, Va. (AP) ? Mark Stewart turns quite a few heads as he zips through the streets on his neon green ELF bike. With each pedal, his feet take turns sticking out from the bottom while a gentle motor hums in the background.

What he's driving looks like a cross between a bicycle and a car, the closest thing yet to Fred Flintstone's footmobile, only with solar panels and a futuristic shape.

It's a "green" option for today's commuters.

Stewart, a 65-year-old family therapist and school psychologist from Cambridge, Mass., took the summer off in order to drive his new ELF bike more than 1,200 miles on trails and roads using the East Coast Greenway, a bike and pedestrian trail that runs from Canada to Key West.

He began his journey by flying down to Durham, N.C., on July 15, and estimates that the entire trip will take about a month. He covered the first leg, from Durham, N.C. to Reston, Va., over roughly five days, 60 miles at a time.

Needless to say, he's getting lots of questions along the way.

"It reminds me of when I saw a Smart car the first time," said Joanne Bury as she emerged from her Reston condominium building to take a look at the vehicle. "This is incredible. What is it?"

Such attention, Stewart says, is par for the course.

"I don't mind though. I mean I like that people want to talk about it," he said.

The ELF, or "Organic Transit Vehicle," can go for 1,800 miles on the energy equivalent of a gallon of gasoline. It does not require the insurance, repair and car maintenance costs of the average vehicle. Besides the cost of the occasional new tire, the ELF runs completely off what it costs to charge its battery.

Stewart bought the ELF from Durham-based Organic Transit, which sells them for a base price of $5,000. He said he wanted to avoid the almost $1,000 delivery charge, so he decided to fly down to pick up the bike in person and learn how to operate it before taking the long trip back home.

"I spent three days in the shop hanging with the guys there and learning the vehicle," Stewart said. "This is just an unsupported solo trip up here in a vehicle that nobody else really knows."

Stewart's ELF is only about the 40th to come off the production line. While few bike shop workers have seen the contraption, the materials, such as the tires and pedals, are items on your average bicycle.

Organic Transit CEO Rob Cotter took technology from aircrafts, boats and bicycles and incorporated them into a "green" 130-pound vehicle.

"About 30 years ago I was working in the performance car industry working on Porsches and BMWs," Cotter said. "At the time the world record for a streamline bicycle was 55 mph by ground and I realize that those efficiencies are capable with one horsepower. I realized from a social, ethical and environmental standpoint that we're doing something drastically wrong."

He was consulting on bike-sharing technologies being considered for New York City's proposed program when he saw there was a market for his vehicle.

"A combination of environmental catastrophes, high fuel costs, climate change and a migration of people moving to the cities all combined for a trend of people looking for an automotive alternative. But not everyone can fit a bicycle into their daily life," Cotter said.

"Issues like weather, steep hills, lack of carrying capacity, falling over and safety concerns steer many away from bicycles. The ELF was designed to address those concerns, contribute to the rider's health, cost savings and lessen their environmental impact," he said.

Demand has grown significantly, and Organic Transit has opened a second factory. The company is working on their 75th bike, with more than 200 already sold or reserved with a deposit.

"Right now we make them at a rate of one per day hand built in the U.S. but we're about to open up another facility on the West Coast to increase our efficiency sometime this year to get up to four per day," Cotter said.

While the ELF is classified as a bicycle by Organic Transit, the laws surrounding such a vehicle vary.

In the District of Columbia, where Stewart's GPS was taking him, the ELF is not allowed on the bike trails and paths. The city classifies it as a motorized bicycle.

"They can't operate the unit on a sidewalk, they can't park on a street and they can't operate on off-street bike trails or bike routes," said Monica Hernandez of the city's Department of Transportation. "The only thing you can do (on the street) is stop to unload or load the unit."

The ELF would have to be parked off the street.

Stewart says so far he's only gotten looks of curiosity.

"A lot of cops have gone by me no one's said boo. They'll look, they're interested but they don't question its right to be on the road," Stewart said.

Want to Stay in Shape After 60? Get Started Here!

Margaret Manning

Women over 60 are challenging stereotypes and creating a new definition of aging. We are finding new ways to stay healthy ? in mind, body, and spirit. Getting older used to mean inevitable physical weakness and mental decline. However, new research shows that women can stay healthy and get stronger and mentally sharp as they get older.

Whether you have specific goals to increase your physical stamina and mental clarity or just want to be more active and able to live life with energy and verve, here are some ideas for staying in shape.

Make it Fun

Fitness shouldn?t be a chore. Instead it should be a part of your day that you look forward to, something that you love to do. Whether you want to take a yoga class, run with a friend, or start a new sport that you?ve never tried before, the key to a successful fitness routine is that is it does not become ?routine.? If you?re energized and excited by integrating new things into your exercise activities, you?ll be more likely to keep doing them.

Make it Social

For women over 60 living alone, there are more ways than ever to stay connected to the people you care about. Keeping physically fit can be a ?social? activity as well. Instead of getting together with friends to eat a high-calorie dinner and drink alcohol, why not look for occasions where you can meet friends to enjoy active outdoor activities like hiking, biking or walking. Making exercise into a social activity and having shared goals will motivate you to set goals and keep moving ? more frequently and purposefully than you might have done on your own.

Make it an Adventure

Staying in shape does not have to be an everyday ?routine? done only at the gym in the city where you live. Staying in shape can reflect your overall spirit of adventure. Do you love to travel and do yoga? Go on a yoga tour. Do you love to run, well what about taking part in a special ?fun run? that is more than just a race? Sign up for a special themed 5K run like the ?Color Run? or the ?Electric Run,? a high-energy 5K run enhanced with music and a light show.

Keep Eating Healthy

Exercise is complemented by a healthy diet and by adding a variety of healthy supplements to your routine. Making sure sensible balanced eating is part of your overall diet and taking your vitamins is not just important for children, it?s important for women over 60 as well.

Stay Positive

As discussed in this article about the importance of positive thinking, looking on the ?bright side? can help women over 60 get more exercise! Studies have shown that older adults are more likely to keep going to the gym if they have an overall positive attitude toward life and toward physical activity. Creating a fitness plan that makes you feel good (and keeps you feeling motivated to go back) is a virtuous cycle ? the better you feel, the easier it is to be positive, and the more positive you feel, the easier it is to keep staying active and strong!
